ISU may charge tobacco users more for insurance - WISH

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Indiana State University is considering changing its health insurance policies to reward employees who agree to health screenings and risk assessments and penalize those who use tobacco products.

ISU officials tell the Tribune-Star the moves are designed to help employees become healthier and curb increases in health insurance costs.

Vice President of Business Affairs Diann McKee says the recommendations are still being reviewed and would need approval from the board of trustees.

The proposals include surcharges of up to $100 per pay period for those who use tobacco products. ISU also would launch a tobacco cessation reimbursement program to help faculty and staff quit smoking.

McKee says ISU is the only one of the state's four major universities without a surcharge for tobacco users.
