Sports Year in Review: Bulldawgs win another state football championship

Click photo to enlarge

The Las Cruces Bulldawgs celebrate their 2012 State Football Championship.

LAS CRUCES ? Earlier this month the Las Cruces High football team won their seventh state championship in program history - the Bulldawgs' fifth under head coach Jim Miller.

"Times have changed and as coaches, we have to change," said Miller, whose 2012 team finished the season 11-1. "I'm a father figure to a lot of these kids now."

Las Cruces won its first state championship since 2008, beating Sandia 35-28 on Dec. 7 in Albuquerque.

"They wanted it so much at the beginning of the year," Miller said. "Doing what they did against a great Sandia football team, it shows a lot of character from these seniors."

The Bulldawgs were led by senior quarterback Jonathan Joy, who accounted for four touchdowns against Sandia. The Bulldawgs needed everyone however, as Sandia stormed back after trailing 21-0.

"We looked up, we had eight minutes left to pound the ball and let the clock run out," said tight end Kamryn Dixon. "We got in the huddle and coach has been preaching it to us all year: One heartbeat. It paid off."

Las Cruces High's lone loss of the season came in September on the road to Rio Rancho. The Bulldawgs ended the regular season with a 36-13 victory over Mayfield to win their 10th district championship.

As the year went on, and Joy became more comfortable, the Bulldawgs were unstoppable offensively. Las Cruces put 70 points up on Clovis in the quarterfinals and scored 55 points against Eldorado in the semifinals.

"The only time we've hurt ourselves is

with our own mistakes," Las Cruces tight end Sam Denmark said. "If we all execute we know nothing can stop us. The only thing that can stop us is ourselves."

Miller improved to 5-0 in state championship games, keeping the Bulldawgs on track after entering the season as one of few favorites.

New Mexico's state playoff system is set up where after the first round, teams owe one another based on playoff history. For teams who have had success in the past, it causes the playoff road to be that much more difficult to win a title. Las Cruces was on the road for two of its three title games, making the 2012 title that much more difficult but perhaps the road will be easier next time the Bulldawgs contend.

Howard Dean: ?If We Go Over The Cliff, Then The President Has A Lot More Leverage?

On ABC?s This Week, former DNC Chair Howard Dean noted a possible political gain for President Obama if Congress doesn?t reach a deal on the fiscal cliff. ?I believe?that if we go over the cliff, then the president has a lot more leverage.?

Vanity Fair National Editor Todd Purdum agreed with temporary host Jonathan Karl that it?s ?ultimately? the president?s economy. ?The tough issues are not being dealt with,? he said.

Dean agreed and noted the ?frustrating thing? for him is that ?Washington is incapable of making a deal that will help the country.? With politicians too focused on deals that will help themselves, an effective deal isn?t on the table.

According to Dean, going over the fiscal cliff means an automatic tax hike on the middle class and ?that will be bad for every politician in Washington.? Expressing more pessimism on the politics of the deal, Dean said an automatic increase in taxes might inspire Congress to ?actually get something done.? Doubling down on his comments, Dean opined, ?At this late hour, I think almost any deal they come up with is worse than going over the cliff.?

Asked about the deal currently being negotiated, Dean agreed with Karl that it would effectively reduce tax rates and ?make the deficit worse.?

African Union chief heads to Central African Republic

The head of the African Union arrived in the Central African Republic Sunday as tensions mounted between the government and rebels there, an official said.

Benin President Thomas Boni Yayi, who chairs the regional body, met with the Central African Republic's president, said Margaret Vogt, a U.N. special representative.

The talks come amid lingering unrest in the inland African nation.

Rebels, angry with the government, have staged attacks in recent days. And the volatile situation has spurred demonstrations in Bangui, the country's capital and largest city.

Government authorities set an 8 p.m. (2 p.m. ET) curfew Sunday, said Josue Binoua, the minister of territorial administration and decentralization.

Rebels and government officials are scheduled to meet early this week for talks in Gabon, on Africa's western coast, Binoua said. He did not specify the date when the discussions would begin.

Amid fears of more violence, officials from various nations take steps to protect their citizens and interests in the Central African Republic.

France deployed 180 troops from Gabon to Bangui overnight to protect French citizens in the Central African Republic's capital, said Col. Thierry Burkhard, a spokesman for France's defense ministry.

U.S. President Barack Obama wrote a letter Saturday to Congress informing them that about 50 U.S. troops were sent to Chad on Thursday "to support the evacuation of U.S. embassy personnel and U.S. citizens from the Central African Republic."

Rebels were reported earlier last week to be about 190 miles from Bangui. But there's been a lull in rebel attacks in recent days.

75 percent tax on ultrarich? French court nixes plan

?

By The Associated Press

PARIS -- Embattled French President Francois Hollande suffered a fresh setback Saturday when France's highest court threw out a plan to tax the ultrawealthy at a 75 percent rate, saying it was unfair.

In a stinging rebuke to one of Socialist Hollande's flagship campaign promises, the constitutional council ruled Saturday that the way the highly contentious tax was designed was unconstitutional. It was intended to hit incomes over 1 million euros ($1.32 million).

The largely symbolic measure would have only hit a tiny number of taxpayers and brought in an estimated 100 million to 300 million euros - an insignificant amount in the context of France's roughtly 85 billion euro deficit.

?

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault was quick to respond, saying in a statement following the decision the government would resubmit the measure to take the court's concerns into account.

The court's ruling took issue not with the size of the tax, but with the way it discriminated between households depending on how incomes were distributed among its members. A household with two earners each making under 1 million euros would be exempt from the tax, while one with one earner making 1.2 million euros would have to pay.?

Top 5 Reasons Outsourcing Works for Any Business - Inspirationfeed

Expansion, globalization, a harsh economic landscape ? these are all reasons why many businesses decide to outsource sections or even entire departments to firms both at home and abroad. And in any business the bottom line is profit. So when a company realizes it is lacking in skill or resources in a particular department, the option of outsourcing begins to look very attractive. However, it?s important to know which areas can benefit the greatest from outsourcing. One area that can almost always benefit from this method is customer service.

In any business it is possible to draw a line directly from profits to the overall quality of customer care. Stated simply: the better the customer feels he or she is treated, the more likely it is he or she will come back. In many scenarios, the first contact a business has with a customer is over the phone. That?s why it?s vitally important to ensure each individual call is handled quickly, efficiently and respectfully. This is where call centers, one of the cornerstones of outsourcing, come in.

But many people think outsourcing to entities such as call centers is the luxury of big Fortune 500 companies. This is not the case at all. In fact, small businesses can benefit from outsourcing in greater ways than large monolithic companies can. Here are just a few reasons why customer service outsourcing can benefit any business:\

outsourcing Top 5 Reasons Outsourcing Works for Any Business

Lower Operational and Labor Costs

Anyone who runs a business appreciates the value of low overhead costs. The misconception comes in when business owners feel outsourcing to a call center would be cost prohibitive. This isn?t the case in the slightest. It?s been documented that hiring a call center saves money compared to hiring a whole new in-staff customer service department. And with outsourcing there are no staff training costs to worry about either.

More Time to Focus on What a Business Does Best

Outsourcing allows a business to farm out otherwise time-consuming customer service processes to professionals. The great benefit of this is that it frees the business up to focus exclusively on those other core areas critical to growth.

Access to Professional Services

There are certain things companies do well and certain things they lack experience in. Running an entire customer service department oftentimes falls into the latter category, as far as business is concerned.??Outsourcing to call centers is like hiring an entire professional and well-trained department that requires almost no oversight from the business itself.

Free Up Crucial Internal Resources

When a business outsources, they automatically remove the burden from in-house staff that would otherwise be concerned with the new process. With a call center, in-house employees are free to be utilized in areas that can grow the company.

Access to Resources

Even if a business does have the large staff required to maintain an entire customer service department, they oftentimes don?t have the resources. Whether it?s money or technology, many outsourcing agencies provide world-class resources that ensure their staff is well equipped to handle the task at hand.

These are just a few of the main reasons why more and more businesses, big and small are opting to outsource various areas of their processes, such as customer service. Of course, the end game in all of this is profit, and above all what outsourcing can do is save costs on overhead. These savings can then be absorbed back into the business in the form of a buffer capital fund. This improves a company?s bottom line and provides a measure of security in uncertain economic times.

Nation running out of ammo - Legal Insurrection

Reaction to threats by Senator Dianne Feinstein and others to ban certain weapons and serverely restrict ownership of guns generally has caused a run on gun stores, as is widely reported.

Less reported is the run on ammunition, leaving ammunition inventories down 93% since election day.

So reports Traction Control blog, Plunge! Ammunition Levels Less Than 10% of Pre-Election Levels:

Ammunition Stock levels have fallen by more than 90% from the pre-Election Day levels. Less than 10% remains available. Available Ammunition links will be updated throughout the day.

Handguns are down by 80%, Long Guns by 63% for an overall 72.2% reduction in firearms inventories.

AR pattern rifles are becoming particularly difficult to source.

Plunge902

In some locations, ammunition is hard to find:

Gun buyers in Houston have bought up the entire inventory of AR guns. It is not just the guns. The ammunition is sold out. The magazines are sold out, and not just the magazines that hold 30 or more rounds. Even finding a 10-round magazine is elusive. And ammunition? The smaller boxes of ammunition in the 223-556 calibers may be found, but not the larger boxes. Try calling Top Gun, Academy, Carter Country and other stores and you will get more or less the same answer: ?We are sold out entirely, we have no idea when we are getting new stock in, and we have no idea what the pricing will be.? Even the online sites that deal in guns and ammo are now low on inventory as sales have spiked.

Investors are noticing what it will mean for ammunition manufacturers in 2013:

Right now, ammo is severely constrained in all major retail stores and online. Local checks by the author at multiple Academy Sports and Outdoors, (which is owned by (KKR), Walmart (WMT), and Dicks Sporting Goods (DKS) have all meet with the same feedback ? gun sales, especially of AR-type weapons and pistols, are highly elevated, with some places being sold out of AR-type weapons. Ammo is scarce for popular rounds such as 9mm, .40 cal, .223, and 7.62?39.

Online stores such as cheaperthandirt.com are also sold out on many popular rounds. We had to go all the way to the 9th product page to find 9mm in a 50 round box for sale! ?

Clearly, ammo is in high demand right now, and from our point of view, it has never been harder to find.

Sleep Apnea Linked to Heart Disease

A new study has found a link between sleep apnea and heart disease, very similar to the link between diabetes and heart disease.

Results from the study, which was conducted by Romanian researchers, show that of those with obstructive sleep apnea (which can cause a person to stop breathing during sleep), arteries are stiffer than the arteries of people without the condition. Stiff arteries are directly linked to greater heart risks.

These stiff arteries are similar to the arterial stiffness seen in people with diabetes that in turn increases their risk of heart disease. If you think you might be at risk for diabetes or heart disease, explore your options for preventive screenings now.

Putin signs anti-US adoptions bill

(AP) ? President Vladimir Putin on Friday signed a law banning Americans from adopting Russian children, abruptly terminating the prospects for more than 50 youngsters preparing to join new families and sparking critics to liken him to King Herod.

The move is part of a harsh response to a U.S. law targeting Russians deemed to be human rights violators. Although some top Russian officials including the foreign minister openly opposed the bill, Putin signed it less than 24 hours after receiving it from Parliament, where it passed both houses overwhelmingly.

The law also calls for the closure of non-governmental organizations receiving American funding if their activities are classified as political ? a broad definition many fear could be used to close any NGO that offends the Kremlin.

The law takes effect Jan. 1, the Kremlin said. Children's rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov said 52 children who were in the pipeline for U.S. adoption would remain in Russia.

The ban is in response to a measure signed into law by President Barack Obama this month that calls for sanctions against Russians assessed to be human rights violators.

That stems from the case of Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian lawyer who was arrested after accusing officials of a $230 million tax fraud. He was repeatedly denied medical treatment and died in jail in 2009. Russian rights groups claimed he was severely beaten.

A prison doctor who was the only official charged in the case was acquitted by a Moscow court on Friday. Although there was no demonstrable connection to Putin's signing the law a few hours later, the timing underlines what critics say is Russia's refusal to responsibly pursue the case.

The adoption ban has angered both Americans and Russians who argue it victimizes children to make a political point, cutting off a route out of frequently dismal orphanages for thousands.

"The king is Herod," popular writer Oleg Shargunov said on his Twitter account, referring to the Roman-appointed king of Judea at the time of Jesus Christ's birth, who the Bible says ordered the massacre of Jewish children to avoid being supplanted by a prophesied newborn king of the Jews.

A painting depicting the massacre and captioned "an appropriate response to the Magnitsky act" spread widely on the Internet. The phrase echoed Putin's characterization of the ban while it was under consideration.

U.S. State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell expressed regret over Putin's signing the law and urged Russia to "allow those children who have already met and bonded with their future parents to finish the necessary legal procedures so that they can join their families."

Vladimir Lukin, head of the Russian Human Rights Commission and a former ambassador to Washington, said he would challenge the law in the Constitutional Court.

The U.S. law galvanized Russian resentment of the United States, which Putin has claimed funded and encouraged the wave of massive anti-government protests that arose last winter.

The Parliament initially considered a relatively similar retaliatory measure, but amendments have expanded it far beyond a tit-for-tat response.

UNICEF estimates that there are about 740,000 children not in parental custody in Russia while about 18,000 Russians are on the waiting list to adopt a child. The U.S. is the biggest destination for adopted Russian children ? more than 60,000 of them have been taken in by Americans over the past two decades.

Russians historically have been less enthusiastic about adopting children than most Western cultures. Putin, along with signing the adoption ban, on Friday issued an order for the government to develop a program to provide more support for adopted children.

Lev Ponomarev, one of Russia's most prominent human rights activists, hinted at that reluctance when he said Parliament members who voted for the bill should take custody of the children who were about to be adopted.

"The moral responsibility lies on them," he told Interfax. "But I don't think that even one child will be taken to be brought up by deputies of the Duma."

Many Russians have been distressed for years by reports of Russian children dying or suffering abuse at the hands of their American adoptive parents. The new Russian law was dubbed the "Dima Yakovlev Bill" after a toddler who died in 2008 when his American adoptive father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours.

In that case, the father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter and Russia has complained of acquittals or light sentences in other such cases.

The Investigative Committee, Russia's top investigative body, on Friday complained that its attempts to have the acquittals overturned or reconsidered had been ignored by the United States. Under U.S. law, acquittals are final except in rare cases.

Russians also bristled at how the widespread adoptions appeared to show them as hardhearted or too poor to take care of orphans. Astakhov, the children's ombudsman, charged that well-heeled Americans often got priority over Russians who wanted to adopt.

A few lawmakers even claimed that some Russian children were adopted by Americans only to be used for organ transplants or become sex toys or cannon fodder for the U.S. Army. A spokesman for Russia's dominant Orthodox Church said that children adopted by foreigners and raised outside the church will not enter God's kingdom.

Featured Food: Kale ? No Limits Endurance

When I was a kid, I remember going out to dinner, and seeing this curly green stuff lining the plate. Presumably, it was placed there as a basic garnish, to fill the plate out. I never realized that it was possible to eat the stuff.

The ?stuff? I?m talking about is kale. For the past several years, John and I have incorporated kale in our diet on an almost-daily basis. And, there are plenty of good reasons why you should too.

Nutritional profile

Kale is a low-calorie, nutrient dense food, with only about 33 calories per 1-cup serving, but with a broad array of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.

Despite such a low calorie count, Kale packs in the nutrients. It is rich in vitamins A, C, K, B6. It also provides helpings of iron, calcium, folate, manganese, copper, and phosphorous. In fact, per calorie, Kale has more iron than beef and more calcium than milk!

Health Benefits

All of these nutrients means there are ample health benefits that can be realized by incorporate some kale into your diet. ?Some have dubbed this green as the healthiest food on the planet. Given all of the nutrients packed into one serving, it?s no wonder that more and more people have begun to make kale a regular staple in their daily diet.

Kale is heart healthy. Due to a mix of its dietary fiber and anti-inflammatory properties, it has been shown to lower cholesterol levels.

Kale is a cancer fighter, thanks to all those wonderful anti-oxidants.

Kale is high in Vitamin K, which has been shown to help fight alzheimers and cancer, and is linked with improving bone health and preventing blood clots.

Kale is cleansing, given the presence of iron, sulfur and fiber. This cleansing function is particularly beneficial for your liver.

Kale is good for your eyes, thanks to the presence of lutein and zeaxanthin.

Tips for Preparing Kale

Kale Chips

One of the easiest and most delicious ways to prepare this green is kale chips. Prepare the kale by ripping the leaves off the stem, and then chopping it into bite size pieces. Spread the kale onto a cookie sheet, drizzle with olive oil, sea salt, and other seasonings of your choice, such as garlic or onion powder, old bay seasoning, cumin, or cayenne pepper to name a few. Bake at 400 degrees until crispy, about 10-15 minutes.

Sauteed Kale

Another option is to saute the kale. Prepare the kale similar as you would for the chips, then saute in a pan with olive oil, chopped garlic and onions.

Soups and Salads

Add chopped kale to your favorite soups. It goes wonderfully with bean soups. It cooks down quite a bit, so you will want to add in the kale in the last 10-20 minutes of cooking.

You can also add chopped, raw kale to your salads for an extra crunch. In its raw form, you are guaranteed to get the most significant nutritional benefits.

Veggie Smoothies or Juice

For those of you with a juicer, you can also make kale juice. Even if you don?t have a juicer, you can make a veggie smoothie with kale. For example, mix 1-2 kale leaves (stems removed) with chopped cucumber, tomato and blueberries. Add chia seeds and spirulina for an extra nutritional punch. Add water, soy milk or almond milk (depending upon how creamy you?d like it), and blend until smooth. If you?d like a bit more sweetness, you can add some organic honey to the mix.

LG Display is bringing Ultra HD TVs in multiple sizes, high res mobile screens and more to CES

LG Display is bringing Ultra HD TVs in 55, 65 and 84inch sizes to CES, high res mobile screens too

The manufacturing white label behind products from LG Electronics and many, many other companies, LG Display will have something new for us in Las Vegas as well. In a press release, the company announced it will show off Ultra HD (4K) panels in 55-, 65- and 84-inch sizes (shown above), complete with its FPR passive 3D tech built in. Since LG Display makes panels for quite a few of the HDTVs on shelves, it follows that we'll be seeing actual products shipping in those sizes in the coming year from several brands. It also will show off its work in other areas, with a 30-inch 4K monitor, a 5.5-inch 1080p screen for smartphones, a 1,920 x 1,200 7-inch tablet display, and a new QSXGA (2,560 x 1,700) screen destined for laptops that packs all of those pixels into just 12.9-inches.

PPI isn't everything however, and LG Display is bringing several displays notable for their tiny bezels as well, including a 23.8-inch monitor in its Neo-Blade Series, a 13.3-inch laptop screen with a 2mm bezel, and a 4.7-inch mobile screen with a 1mm thick bezel. Finally, the new year also brings tweaks to its OLED displays, which will show off an ultra light and thin design at just 3.5kg and 4mm thick --- and hopefully actually being released in the US this year. Half Of Americans Would See Their Taxes Go Up If This Obamacare ...

WASHINGTON -- New taxes are coming Jan. 1 to help finance President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. Most people may not notice. But they will pay attention if Congress decides to start taxing employer-sponsored health insurance, one of the options in play if lawmakers can ever agree on a budget deal to reduce federal deficits.

The tax hikes already on the books, taking effect in 2013, fall mainly on people who make lots of money and on the health care industry. But about half of Americans benefit from the tax-free status of employer health insurance. Workers pay no income or payroll taxes on what their employer contributes for health insurance, and in most cases on their own share of premiums as well.

It's the single biggest tax break allowed by the government, outstripping the mortgage interest deduction, the deduction for charitable giving and other better-known benefits. If the value of job-based health insurance were taxed like regular income, it would raise nearly $150 billion in revenue in 2013, according to congressional estimates. By comparison, wiping away the mortgage interest deduction would bring in only about $90 billion.

"If you are looking to raise revenue to pay for tax reform, that is the biggest pot of money of all," said Martin Sullivan, chief economist with Tax Analysts, a nonpartisan publisher of tax information.

It's hard to see how lawmakers can avoid touching health insurance if they want to eliminate loopholes and curtail deductions so as to raise revenue and lower tax rates. Congress probably wouldn't do away with the health care tax break, but limit it in some form. Such limits could be keyed to the cost of a particular health insurance plan, the income level of taxpayers, or a combination.

Many economists think some kind of limit would be a good thing, because it would force consumers to watch costs, and that could help keep health care spending in check. Obama's health law took a tentative step toward limits by imposing a tax on high-value health insurance plans. But that doesn't start until 2018.

Next spring will be three years since Congress passed the health care overhaul, but because of a long phase-in, many of the taxes to finance the plan are only now coming into effect. Medicare spending cuts that help pay for covering the uninsured have started to take effect, but they also are staggered. The law's main benefit, coverage for 30 million uninsured people, will take a little longer. It doesn't start until Jan. 1, 2014.

The biggest tax hike from the health care law has a bit of mystery to it. The legislation calls it a "Medicare contribution," but none of the revenue will go to the Medicare trust fund. Instead, it's funneled into the government's general fund, which does pay the lion's share of Medicare outpatient and prescription costs, but also covers most other things the government does.

The new tax is a 3.8 percent levy on investment income that applies to individuals making more than $200,000 or married couples above $250,000. Projected to raise $123 billion from 2013-2019, it comes on top of other taxes on investment income. And while it does apply to profits from home sales, the vast majority of sellers will not have to worry since another law allows individuals to shield up to $250,000 in gains on their home from taxation. (Married couples can exclude up to $500,000 in home sale gains.)

Investors have already been taking steps to avoid the tax, selling assets this year before it takes effect. The impact of the investment tax will be compounded if Obama and Republicans can't stave off the automatic tax increases scheduled at the end of the year if there's no budget agreement.

High earners will face another new tax under the health care law Jan. 1. It's an additional Medicare payroll tax of 0.9 percent on wage income above $200,000 for an individual or $250,000 for couples. This one does go to the Medicare trust fund.

Donald Marron, director of the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, calls the health care law tax increases medium-sized by historical standards. The center, a joint project of the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, provides in-depth analysis on tax issues.

They also foreshadow the current debate about raising taxes on people with high incomes. "These were an example of the president winning, and raising taxes on upper-income people," said Marron. "They are going to happen."

Other health care law tax increases taking effect Jan. 1:

_ A 2.3 percent sales tax on medical devices used by hospitals and doctors. Industry is trying to delay or repeal the tax, saying it will lead to a loss of jobs. Several economists say manufacturers should be able to pass on most of the cost.

_ A limit on the amount employees can contribute to tax-free flexible spending accounts for medical expenses. It's set at $2,500 for 2013, and indexed thereafter for inflation.

I installed some speed reading apps and tested them. I?ve so far notices a few ?categories? or groups of equals:

  • One kind exists mostly from showing a text word by word in the middle of the screen. Showing each word a very short time and so you can read at a high wpm because you never need to move your eyes.
  • Another kind is merely a speed reading article disguised as app.
  • Another kind is no speed reading app but just a reading app with a fancy name.
  • Yet another kind is training in the form of news/actually.
  • And the last kind is a training app, not for your own stuff but purely for training.

I only tested them quickly and unions talked the non-interesting. But they aren?t quite what I?m looking for. Maybe I should write one myself for training and guided reading.

Conn. woman: Why did I survive '11 Christmas fire?

(AP) ? Since the fire at her Connecticut home on Christmas Day of last year that took the lives of her three daughters and her parents, Madonna Badger has wondered why she survived.

Badger, a New York advertising executive until the 2011 fire in Stamford, made it through the funerals for her children and parents. Then she fell apart, she told the Hearst Connecticut Media Group (http://bit.ly/UsPBvi).

Her hair turned gray and fell out in clumps. She waved a fistful of pills in the air and threatened to swallow them.

Badger traveled to Little Rock, Ark., in February to live with a friend from their college days. She says the only condition was that she promised to not commit suicide.

"I don't know why I survived," she says. "I told everyone I was going to kill myself."

The fire killed 7-year-old twins Grace and Sarah Badger, 9-year-old Lily Badger and their maternal grandparents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson. The city investigated and determined the cause was accidental.

Firefighters arrived and dragged Badger off the burning building. A friend also survived the fire.

Badger remembers lying in a hospital bed for hours, screaming for her children. A doctor took her hand and told her that her daughters and parents had died.

"I remember coiling up into a little ball and I looked at the nurse," she said. "I just wanted to crawl out of my body. I don't remember anything after that. People in the hospital said I was just screaming and wailing."

Badger wears three bracelets on her wrist, one for each daughter. Grace gave her the beaded bracelet on Christmas Eve and Madonna was wearing it when she escaped the fire. Two leather bracelets symbolize Lily and Sarah.

"Now that they're not here with me physically, but here with me spiritually and every other way, I still want to be a great mom," Badger said.

Badger is keeping her house in Little Rock and rented a loft in Brooklyn and plans to start working again in January. She traveled to Thailand on Christmas with several suitcases of her daughters' toys, collected from her garage after the fire. She planned to donate them to at-risk girls at an orphanage.

"Santa Claus and retail signs and gift wrap and Christmas lights just doesn't do it for me right now," she said. "I don't know if it ever will."

Badger said she believes love is the legacy her children leave.

"They're not going to write a masterpiece or a symphony. This is really it," she said. "What saves you, what saves us all, is love."

We Are Witnessing The Death Of Small Business In America ...

December 25, 2012 ? The Economic Collapse ? closed-for-business

Historically, small businesses have been the primary engine of new job creation in the United States.? If the economy was getting healthy, we would expect to see the number of jobs at new businesses rise.? Instead, we are witnessing just the opposite.? We are told that the economy is supposed to be ?recovering?, but the number of ?startup jobs? at new businesses has fallen?for five years in a row.?

According to an analysis of U.S. Department of Labor data performed?by economist Tim Kane, there were almost 12 startup jobs per 1000 Americans back in the year 2006.? By 2011, that figure had fallen to less than 8 startup jobs per 1000 Americans.? According to Kane, the number of jobs in the United States at businesses that are less than one year old has fallen from 4.1 million in 1994 to?2.5 million?in 2010.? Overall, the number of ?new entrepreneurs and business owners? has fallen by more than 50 percent as a percentage of the population since 1977.? The United States was once known as ?the land of opportunity?, but now that is fundamentally changing.? At this point we truly do have a ?crisis of entrepreneurship? in this country, and that is a huge reason why?America is in decline.? We are witnessing the slow death of the small business in America, and that is incredibly bad news for all of us.

Unfortunately, the problems that small businesses are experiencing right now have been building up for decades.? The economic environment for small businesses in America has become incredibly toxic.? Sadly, we can see this in the numbers.? According to Kane, the following is how the decline in the number of startup jobs per 1000 Americans breaks down?by presidential administration:

Bush Sr.: 11.3

Clinton: 11.2

Bush Jr.: 10.8

Obama: 7.8

Obviously, we are headed very much in the wrong direction.? Kane speculates about why this may be happening?in his paper?

There is anecdotal evidence that the U.S. policy environment has become inadvertently hostile to entrepreneurial employment. At the federal level, high taxes and higher uncertainty about taxes are undoubtedly inhibiting entrepreneurship, but to what degree is unknown. The dominant factor may be new regulations on labor.

(AP) ? A 30-year-old Seattle man was killed and another man wounded in a shooting at a crowded bar in Bellevue, Wash., early Monday, police said.

The shooting broke out just after 1 a.m. at Munchbar at Bellevue Square, an upscale shopping center about 10 miles east of Seattle, said Carla Iafrate, a spokeswoman for the Bellevue Police Department.

Police officers were outside the bar when gunfire erupted because a large crowd had gathered there, she said.

More than 600 people were inside the venue at the time of the shooting. "It was a very complicated scene," Iafrate said.

The wounded man was taken to Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue. Iafrate did not immediately know his age, hometown or condition.

The shooting appears to be an isolated incident. "There was some type of altercation," before the shooting happened, she said. No one has been arrested, and investigators were trying to put together a description of the shooter, she said.

No officers were involved in the shooting.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, telling local media they dove for cover or hit the floor when they heard gunshots.

The shopping center opened Monday morning as normal, Iafrate said, adding that the shooting had minimal impact on overall operations.

How to Write a Great Marketing Plan For Your Book Proposal ? Ask ...

Most writers are intimidated by book proposals. I can see why. Writers are writers, not salesmen, not marketers, not researchers, ?and not necessarily aggressive self-promoters. ?But all of these qualities are necessary when you are putting together your proposal.

I don?t think proposals are that hard, that is unless you don?t have a clear idea of what your book is about. And even then, I have found that in the process of writing the proposal, the writer?s ideas become clarified, the structure of the book tightened up, weaknesses become apparent, ?and more often than not ?the concept of the book gets ?strengthened. ?Writing the proposal is time well spent. And a good agent will lead you through that process.

Simply put, a book proposal is a business plan. The purpose of the proposal is to describe ??your book idea to a publisher and to get them excited about it. ?But you also need to be careful not to oversell. Publishers are going to give you a lot of money (well, probably only an insultingly small amount of ?money) based on the material in the proposal, and they have a right to know what they are buying.? Trying to dazzle them with hype or baffle them with bullshit ?isn?t going to work. We have heard the pitches ?a million times about the book being ?a shoe-in for Oprah, ?being the newest Eat Pray Love, or the next Spielberg blockbuster. Certainly all of those things would be nice, but they usually don?t happen. Trying to oversell the book sends the message that the writer is either ?unrealistic or manipulative. These are messages you don?t want to convey in the proposal.

A good proposal anticipates the questions and concerns an editor is going to bring to her reading of your proposal. I did a blog post about this last year called ?Think Like an Editor.? ?You need to know what those questions are, and your proposal needs to answer them convincingly.

Of course, the $64,000 question is going to be whether your book will make money. And one of the questions you will need to answer is ?what will the writer do to help sell the book?. ?That question needs to be addressed in the ?marketing? section of the book proposal. That?s usually the section that authors have the most difficulty with. So let?s talk about that today.

The marketing sections that come to me in draft proposals usually fall between the Scylla of? being totally lame and the Charybdis of grandiosity. I?ve previously written a blog post called ?The Art of the Pitch? where I tried to evaluate pitches that work compared to those that don?t. We have already mentioned above some examples of grandiosity. I will not ?allow the word ?Oprah? ?to be mentioned in a proposal that I am submitting, unless you happen to be sleeping with Oprah?s latest diet guru. At the other end of the scale, I see marketing plans which tell the publisher that the author will have a publication party at her mom?s house and might contact local booksellers to (try to) schedule events. These pitches are totally lame. My favorite pitch was by an author who said? that he would agree to be on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, time permitting.

Remember that the marketing section is about what you are going to do. You don?t have to advise ?the publisher ?about what they already know. You don?t have to make a list of ?major national periodicals to send review copies to. But if you are aware of niches that the publisher might not know about, you should bring that up.

And you should be quite emphatic about what you will do. And that means don?t fill up the proposal with? errant speculation and wishful thinking. I generally tell my clients not to use the word ?might? in their marketing section. It?s weak and sends the message that you also ?might not? do what you are proposing and probably won?t. And while you are at it, don?t use the word ?try? either (as in ?I will try to get Cameron Diaz to give me a blurb.)

A good marketing plan needs to be robust, but it also needs to be convincing.? ?You have to speak with authority. That means that you need to have a realistic and professional tone. And you also have to be honest. Don?t promise what you can?t deliver.

Here are some ?points you should be thinking about when writing? ?your plan.

  • Websites. Publishers expect you to have a website for your book. So you should mention that you intend to do it. Now if you already have a website with lots of fans and lots of unique views, then you have a compelling pitch and you should make it.
  • Blogs and social media. Publishers like authors to blog. If you have one, that?s great. And if you have impressive numbers of followers and viewers, let the publisher know.? But a lot of writers aren?t going to do blogs. Maybe you don?t have that kind of time. So don?t promise one unless you are committed to it.? Publishers also expect you to engage in social media like Facebook and maybe Twitter, so you should address that. And if you have an impressive? amount of friends and followers in social media, then let the publisher know.
  • Media appearances. If you have strong connections with media and have a realistic chance of getting bookings, then mention that in the proposal. It helps if you have had previous appearances in those venues or if you have a close relationships with people who can help you line them up. But again, don?t engage in wishful thinking.
  • Blurbs are good, but make sure that you either already have the blurbs or have firm commitments. It?s ok to say that Cameron Diaz will blurb your book if she has agreed to do it. Don?t make a list of celebrities that you will ?approach? for blurbs, although by all means, start thinking about who to approach for blurbs after you get a book contract.
  • Speaking engagements. If you ?do public speaking as part of your job or your platform, then talk about the major venues where you will be speaking at the time of publication. You should probably limit this to major venues with significant audiences.
  • Book signings. It?s ok to say that you will aggressively seek out book signings. Remember that publishers usually make the initial contact with the bookstores.
  • Book tours. Publishers won?t send you on a book tour unless you are a huge author. Some authors will go on a tour at their own expense. If you intend to do this, mention it in the proposal. Give the publisher a list of cities and tell them you will work with the publisher to line up signings and media appearances in those cities.
  • Book groups. Offer to meet with book groups reading your book or to do Skype appearances. It?s always a little tricky trying to ferret out these groups. If you have ways of doing it, let the publisher know.
  • Press kits. It?s always nice to put this in the marketing plan, because it shows that you are savvy at promotion. Describe the press kit a little. And if you have creative ways to disseminate it,? let the publisher know. Again remember not to tell the publisher how to do their job.
  • Other? stuff. You should try to think of other creative ways to promote the book that won?t be done by the publisher. Do blog tours, giveaways, op-ed pieces. Hire your own publicist, but let the publisher know and make sure that you will be working closely with the publisher on promotion
  • Platform. Platform is a subject unto itself. I have another blog post called ?Platform is More than Just a Website and a Blog?. If you have a platform, make sure that you leverage it for marketing the book and explain in detail how you plan to do that.

These are just a few ideas. You need to think long and hard about this. Remember whatever you say in this section, the most important thing is to be realistic and convincing. And that means ?in this and in all things?be honest.

Dozens killed in air strike on Syrian bakery

Activists say dozens, possibly hundreds, were killed during an air strike on a bakery in central Syria Sunday. A large crowd had been waiting in line at the bakery to buy bread.

Dozens of people were killed and wounded in an air strike on a bakery in?Syria's central Hama province on Sunday, activists said, with some reporting up to 200 dead.

"There is no way to really know yet how many people were killed. When I got there, I could see piles of bodies all over the ground. There were women and children," said Samer al-Hamawi, an activist in the town of?Halfaya, where the strike hit. "There are also dozens of wounded people"

Halfaya?was seized by rebels last week as part of a campaign to push into new territories in the 21-month-old revolt against President?Bashar al-Assad.

Another?activist said residents picking through the bodies were still determining which were wounded and which were dead.

Hamawi, who spoke via?Skype, uploaded a video of the scene, which showed dozens of dust-coated bodies lined up near a pile of rubble by a concrete building, its walls blackened.

The sounds of people screaming could be heard in the video, as some men rushed to the scene on motorcycles and other residents limped away from the area.

The authenticity of the video could not be immediately verified. The government restricts media access in?Syria.

Activists said more than a thousand people had been queuing at the bakery. Shortages of fuel and flour have made bread production erratic across the country, and people often wait for hours to buy bread.

New York-based?Human Rights Watch?condemned army air strikes on bakeries earlier this year, arguing that in some incidents the military was not using enough precision to target rebel sites and in other instances may have intentionally hit civilians.

"We hadn't received flour in around three days so everyone was going to the bakery today, and lots of them were women and children," Hamawi said. "I still don't know yet if my relatives are among the dead."

The Eco-Friendly Bay Packers entered the NFL playoffs as a single with the league?s hottest teams, and mounted a 21 level second half comeback to drive overtime in opposition to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Factors seemed great when Eco-Friendly Bay won the toss, but only moments later on their season was above right after an Aaron Rodgers fumble that Karlos Dansby returned 17 yards to the recreation profitable rating.
