Fort McMurray Evicts Oil Sands Companies that Helped it Grow

The Canadian town of Fort McMurray, population 76,000, is the?heart?of Alberta?s oil sands largesse?but the town is bursting at its seams with nowhere to expand because the land surrounding it is owned by oil companies.

The government?s answer to this is to?cancel all the leases?on 22,000 hectares of land surrounding Fort McMurray?effective immediately.

In an agreement announced on 26 July, the government promised lease-holders fair reimbursement, with the municipality purchasing the land from the province over the next five to 15 years.

This acreage is more than twice the size of Fort McMurray today, and the idea is to make the town two-thirds the size of Calgary.

For Fort McMurray?whose population is expected to double by 2030 thanks to the very oil sands industry is must now evict?it is a necessity. The town needs more housing and infrastructure, but has nowhere to put it.

?This lack of land has tied our hands when it comes to planning future development, but it?s also led to all sorts of challenges from sparse housing options, limited commercial retail entities and a non-existent space for social profit groups: churches, community halls, store fronts, just to name a few,? Mayor Melissa Blake?told reporters?on 26 July, when the decision was announced. ?Today that all changes.?

Oil sands companies have mixed feelings about the deal. Though the purchase of their leases will be based on fair market prices, some are not convinced they?ll be compensated for all the money they?ve spent developing oil sands here?just to lose their leases.

The most affected will be Value Creation Inc., which holds leases on the largest swathe of territory slated for Fort McMurray?s urban development. According to the Edmonton Journal, the company had planned to develop oil sands reserves here and then return the land to the Fort McMurray authorities?along with newly laid roads?in 10 years. But Fort McMurray can?t wait.

Value Creation says the decision, at least, removes any uncertainty about what is going to happen with these leases. Company advisor Rick Orman noting that the government had been stringing it along for four years while the company continued to spend money on development. Orman also questioned the need to expand Fort McMurray to such an extent, calling it ??excessive?.

Alberta Oilsands Inc. (AOS), however, is less wary. While it?s invested $50 million developing its Clearwater assets here since 2007, it?s getting all its money back, plus interest, and some potentially sweet replacement property thrown into the deal.

AOS CEO Binh Vu told Oilprice.com: ?While we are disappointed at not being able to move to production at Clearwater, with the malaise in the junior markets AOS is trading today at a market capitalization of only half of what the government remuneration will be based on our expenses at Clearwater and interest?so it will be a real boon for current shareholders and investors.?

Do companies having their leases cancelled have anything to worry about and should their shareholders be concerned? We don?t think so ? we copied the below from the Mines and Mineral Act which clearly states how companies will be compensated:

The Mineral Rights Compensation Regulation?(Alberta Regulation 317/2003) establishes the compensation payable by the Crown for cancelled agreements. Compensation includes at least the following:

1. Cost of acquiring the lease including annual license fees and application fees;
2. Wasted exploration and development expenditures;
3. Reclamation costs;
4. Interest of approximately 5 per cent (calculated as Alberta Treasury Branch prime plus 1 per cent).

DNP Asus reveals ROG TYTAN G70 gaming desktop

Didn't snag one of the ROG TYTAN G30s ASUS announced in June? Don't sweat it because the Taiwanese manufacturer has already one-upped itself, combining the transforming case of last year's TYTAN CG8890 with the G30's major features -- water-cooled Core i7-4770K, one-touch overclocking, multi-monitor and surround sound support. Just for good measure, an available Nvidia GTX780 can replace the '30's GTX 680. Sure, the G70 is Haswell-equipped, but that's not nearly as impressive as activating "Turbo Gear" on it is: Push a button and the system overclocks, then its side and top panels extend outward automatically, exposing the rig's 10 fans. How cool is that? As frosty as this tower's innards we'd imagine. If that wasn't enough to push you over the edge, it'll wirelessly charge any Qi-compatible devices you might have as well. This beast of a rig should be available soon at retailers near you, but ASUS hasn't provided pricing. We're guessing it's probably expensive -- call it a hunch.

Sen. Mitch McConnell fighting for his political life?

Mitch McConnell of Kentucky ? the top Republican in the Senate ? faces a tea party challenge in the primary; then, if he survives, a promising young female Democrat in the general. This weekend, the Fancy Farm Picnic will test everyone.?

By Linda Feldmann,?Staff writer / August 2, 2013

Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R) and GOP leaders talk to reporters at the Capitol on Thursday, as Congress prepares to leave town for a five-week recess. Back home in Kentucky, Mr. McConnell faces a tea party primary challenge in the runup to the 2014 election.

It?s only just begun, but the reelection battle of Mitch McConnell ? the top Republican in the Senate ? is already shaping up to be the marquee race of the 2014 midterms. ?

Start with the primary challenge Senator McConnell faces from Matt Bevin, a wealthy, tea-party-backed businessman, reportedly willing to spend his own money. If McConnell makes it past Mr. Bevin, he?s poised to face likely Democratic nominee Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky?s secretary of state and member of a well-connected political family, in the general election.

Add to the mix McConnelll?s mediocre job approval ratings in the state ? only 45 percent in the latest poll, by the Republican firm Wenzel Strategies.

McConnell?s biggest liability may well be his leadership role in Washington. The Republican minority leader hasn?t been able to keep near-civil war from breaking out within his party. If there?s a government shutdown this fall, Republicans could come in for heavy public blame. Even if President Obama is deeply unpopular in Kentucky, Congress is worse off.

Two new polls show a race between McConnell and Secretary Grimes within the margin error, and on Friday, the nonpartisan Cook Political Report moved the race to tossup.

?A lot of it has to do with McConnell,? says Jennifer Duffy, senior editor at the Cook Political Report. ?A lot has to do with frustration with Congress, and Democrats have done a pretty good job of blaming him for everything.?

McConnell?s biggest blow so far has been the primary challenge by Bevin. The five-term McConnell is an experienced politico ? he?s the longest-serving US?senator in Kentucky history ? and he put together an experienced reelection team early, including recruiting Kentucky tea party Sen. Rand Paul's campaign manager. He?s been raising money ever since Election Day 2012, and by mid-July reportedly had $9.6 million in the bank.

But none of that scared off Bevin, a partner in a Louisville hedge fund who blames McConnell for compromising with Democrats. So before McConnell can focus solely on beating Grimes, he has to fend off Bevin, and avoid becoming the latest member of the Washington GOP establishment to fall to a tea party challenge.

Northland College, City of Ashland Collaborate to Keep Beach Groomer

Northland College and the City of Ashland worked together to keep a beach groomer in the region. The Ashland City Council voted unanimously on a resolution to approve the equipment transfer from Northland College to the city.? This includes a beach groomer, dump truck and trailer.

ASHLAND, Wis. ? The beach groomer seen for the last two summers at three Ashland public beaches looks a lot like a Zamboni?but for sand and with only three wheels. Brought to this region with funding from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the beach groomer has been aerating the region?s beaches in an effort to reduce bacteria and in turn, the number of beach closings.

With funding gone and faced with the possibility losing this beach groomer to Lake Michigan, the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute (SOEI) at Northland College teamed with the City of Ashland and took action.

?It no longer made sense for SOEI and Northland College to keep the groomer ? but it was too good of a program to let go,? said SOEI Executive Director Mark Peterson. ?This is a win-win for everyone.?

The College worked with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and negotiated an agreement to allow for the groomer to remain and for the College to donate the groomer to the city.

The EPA agreed, and on Tuesday night (July 30) the Ashland City Council unanimously approved a resolution to approve the equipment transfer, which included the beach groomer, dump truck and trailer.

?In this economic environment that we all operate in, it takes relationships and cooperation with many stakeholder to benefit the community,? said Mayor Bill Whalen. ?Northland College continues to collaborate and support the city of Ashland and for that I thank them.?

Three of the City of Ashland?s beaches have been shown to have nonpoint impairments indicated by elevated E.coli counts.

In 2010, the Chequamegon Bay Area Partnership (CBAP), in conjunction with the SOEI and Northland College, received federal funding from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, implemented by the EPA, to provide E. coli testing and to target, reduce and remove beachfront contamination. The CBAP, formed in 2009, is comprised of 15 agencies, nonprofits and governments, including the SOEI, Northland College and City of Ashland.

In addition to the testing, during the summers of 2011 and 2012, the SOEI staff and Northland College students worked cooperatively with the City of Ashland to coordinate weekly beach cleanups that included grooming the top four inches of beach sand on historically impaired beaches?Maslowski, Kreher and Bayview?to reduce bacterial density.

The grant ended at the end of last summer and the SOEI and the city have since been working on the transfer. ?I?m delighted the city has the opportunity to continue the partnership? and thankful to the College for the gift of the pick-up truck, trailer and beach groomer,? Whalen said.

The city will begin operating the groomer starting August 16. Under EPA rules, the city is not allowed to profit from the groomer however, they may loan it to other governmental or non-profit agencies.

Texas running out of execution drug

A spokesman for the Texas Department of Justice said that the state's stock of pentobarbital, the barbiturate used for the death penalty, has nearly run out.

The state will have to find an alternative whether "another provider for the pentobarbital, or other options that would involve other drugs besides pentobarbital," he said.

Pentobarbital is an anesthetic used to euthanize animals.

The spokesman said that two executions scheduled for September will take place and that a solution should be found by that time. He said the state plans to continue with lethal injections.

Texas has executed 503 people since the death penalty was reinstated in the US in 1976. A total of 1,342 people have been executed in the country since then.

Texas has already put to death 11 of the 22 people executed in the US in 2013, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Oil companies frack in waters off California

Companies prospecting for oil off California's coast have used hydraulic fracturing on at least a dozen occasions to force open cracks beneath the seabed, and now regulators are investigating whether the practice should require a separate permit and be subject to stricter environmental review.

While debate has raged in the U.S. over fracking on land, prompting efforts to ban or severely restrict it, offshore fracking has occurred with little attention in sensitive coastal waters where for decades new oil leases have been prohibited.

Hundreds of pages of federal documents released by the government to The Associated Press and advocacy groups through the Freedom of Information Act show regulators have permitted fracking in the Pacific Ocean at least 12 times since the late 1990s, and have recently approved a new project.

The targets are the vast oil fields in the Santa Barbara Channel, site of a 1969 spill that spewed more than 3 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean, spoiled miles of beaches and killed thousands of birds and other wildlife. The disaster prompted a moratorium on new drill leases and inspired federal clean water laws and the modern environmental movement.

Companies are doing the offshore fracking?which involves pumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of salt water, sand and chemicals into undersea shale and sand formations?to stimulate old existing wells into new oil production.

Federal regulators thus far have exempted the chemical fluids used in offshore fracking from the nation's clean water laws, allowing companies to release fracking fluid into the sea without filing a separate environmental impact report or statement looking at the possible effects. That exemption was affirmed this year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, according to the internal emails reviewed by the AP.

Fracking fluids can comprise hundreds of chemicals?some known and others that aren't since they are protected as trade secrets. Some of these chemicals are toxins to fish larvae and crustaceans, bottom dwellers most at risk from drilling activities, according to government health disclosure documents detailing some of the fluids used off California's shore.

Marine scientists, petroleum engineers and regulatory officials interviewed by the AP could point to no studies that have been performed on the effects of fracking fluids on the marine environment. Research regarding traditional offshore oil exploration has found that drilling fluids can cause reproductive harm to some marine creatures.

"This is a significant data gap, and we need to know what the impacts are before offshore fracking becomes widespread," said Samantha Joye, a marine scientist at the University of Georgia who studies the effects of oil spills in the ocean environment.

The EPA and the federal agency that oversees offshore drilling, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement or BSEE, conduct some routine inspections during fracking projects, but any spills or leaks are largely left to the oil companies to report.

In a statement to the AP, the EPA defended its oversight of offshore fracking, saying its system ensures the practice does not pollute the environment in a way that would endanger human health. Oil companies must obtain permits for wastewater and storm water discharges from production platforms that "ensure all fluids used in the drilling and production process will not adversely impact water quality," the statement said.

Oil companies also maintain that much of the fracking fluid is treated before being discharged into the sea. Tupper Hull, spokesman for the Western States Petroleum Association, said fracking in general is safe and has "never been associated with any risk or harm to the environment" in over six decades in California.

California coastal regulators said they were unaware until recently that offshore fracking was even occurring, and are now asking oil companies proposing new offshore drilling projects if they will be fracking.

Because the area of concern is located more than three miles (about 5 kilometers) off the state's shoreline, federal regulators have jurisdiction over these offshore exploration efforts. However, the state can reject a permit in federal waters if the work endangers water quality.

"It wasn't on our radar before, and now it is," said Alison Dettmer, a deputy director at the California Coastal Commission.

Government documents including permits and internal emails from the BSEE reveal that fracking off the shores of California is more widespread than previously known. While new oil leases are banned, companies can still drill from 23 grandfathered-in platforms in waters where endangered blue and humpback whales and other marine mammals often congregate.

In March, a privately held oil and gas company received permission from the agency to frack some 10 miles (16 kilometers) off the Ventura County coast. The job by DCOR LLC involves using the existing wellbore of an old well to drill a new well. Three so-called "mini-fracks" will be done in an attempt to release oil locked within sand and rocks in the Upper Repetto formation.

Only a month before the application was approved, however, an official with the BSEE voiced concerns about the company's proposed frack and whether the operation would discharge chemicals into the ocean.

"We have an operator proposing to use 'hydraulic stimulation' (which has not been done very often here) and I'm trying to run through the list of potential concerns," Kenneth Seeley, the BSEE's regional environmental officer for the Pacific, wrote in a Feb. 12 email to colleagues. "The operator says their produced water is Superclean! but the way they responded to my questions kind of made me think this was worth following up on."

BSEE officials approved DCOR's application on March 7. The agency told the AP that DCOR's job would use far less fracking fluid than an onshore operation.

"For comparison, well stimulation offshore typically uses 2 percent of the liquids and 7 percent of the sand that is used routinely for onshore hydraulic fracturing," the BSEE said in a statement.

Oil industry estimates show that at least half of the chemical-laced water used in fracking remains in the environment after an operation. Environmental groups say as much as 80 percent of the fluids can be left behind. The rest gets pumped back up to the oil platform, and is piped or barged back to shore for treatment. Companies can also pump the fluids into an old well reservoir to discard it.

DCOR, which did not respond to requests for comment, is not the first company to try to tap more oil from California's offshore reserves, nor is the project the most extensive offshore frack here in recent years.

In January 2010, oil and gas company Venoco Inc. set out to improve the production of one of its old wells with what federal drilling records show was the largest offshore fracking operation attempted in federal waters off California's coast. The target: the Monterey Shale, a vast formation that extends from California's Central Valley farmlands to offshore and could ultimately comprise two-thirds of the nation's shale oil reserves.

Six different fracks were completed during the project, during which engineers funneled a mix of about 300,000 pounds of fracking fluids, sand and seawater 4,500 feet beneath the seabed, according to BSEE documents.

Venoco's attempt only mildly increased production, according to the documents. Venoco declined to comment.

Despite greenlighting offshore fracking projects for years, federal and state regulators now are trying to learn more about the extent of fracking in the Pacific even as officials and marine scientists scramble to weigh the environmental effects.

In January, Jaron Ming, the Pacific regional director of the BSEE, told employees in an email that there had been heightened interest in offshore fracking from within the agency and the public.

"For that reason, I am asking you to pay close attention to any (drilling applications) that we receive and let me know if you believe any of them would be considered a 'frac job.'"

That same month, BSEE estimated in internal emails that only two such jobs had occurred off California in the past two decades. But weeks later, as the agency worked to respond to public requests about fracking offshore, emails show it had found 12 such instances of offshore fracking.

BSEE said it cannot be sure just how often fracking has been allowed without going through every single well file.

Brian Segee, a staff attorney at the Environmental Defense Center, said the uncertainty makes him skeptical about the actual number of offshore fracks. The Santa Barbara-based environmental law firm, which formed in the wake of the 1969 oil spill, is calling for a moratorium on future fracking in the Pacific until the potential environmental effects are studied.

Most fracking efforts off California have yielded mixed results. The first time Venoco fracked offshore in the 1990s, it had limited success. Chevron's one try failed. Out of Nuevo Energy's nine attempts, only one was considered very successful, according to company and BSEE records.

The practice has been more fruitful in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, where it's more common and the porous nature of the geologic formation makes it easier to extract oil, according to regulators and oil industry experts. Still, oil companies surveyed by federal regulators said they haven't ruled out fracking projects in the Pacific in the future.

As fracking technology evolves and companies seek to wring production from old offshore wells, drilling experts caution that strict safety precautions and planning are needed.

Working in the open ocean, "you have to be a lot more careful to avoid any spillage," said Mukul Sharma, a professor of petroleum engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.

David Pritchard, a Texas petroleum engineer who has been working in offshore drilling for 45 years, said offshore fracking "no doubt adds complexity and risk."

One concern is that the high pressure fracking mixture in some jobs might break the rock seal around an old well bore, allowing oil to escape, added another expert, Tulane University petroleum engineering professor Eric Smith.

"I'd say it (offshore fracking) is safe," Smith said, "but nothing's a sure thing in this world."

Indian eugenists accepted as specimens not as scientists. The story ...

I was amusd to read: "Indian eugenists were rebuffed in attempts to join international community as scientists rather than as specimens". The racist sentiment is from the The Oxford Handbook of the History of Eugenics. It is amusing that once one starts looking at the other person's race then everything become race. Race is about prejudgement. There can't be perhaps a more amusing depiction of the consequence of this perspective!

Some notes from this Oxford Handbook:

Indians established many voluntary organisations to promote eugenics.

The Indian Eugenics Society was established in Lahore in 1921, the Sholapur Eugenics Education Society in 1929, the Eugenic Soecity of Bombay in 1930, and the Society for the Study and Promotion of Familiy Hygiene there as well in 1935.

The Madras Neo-Malthusian League was founded in 1928.

The (London based) Eugenics Society provided Indian Associations with reference works and general eugenics education materials. And in turn the Society journal, Eugenics Review, as well as Birth Control News, the London paper run by British birth control pioneer and eugenist Marie Stopes, ran regular news items sent from eugenics workers in India and elsewhere in the globe.

Unlike eugenists elsewhere, eugenists in India were unconcerned with understanding the specific workings of heredity.

Through caste, eugenic-racial theories found their most popular application in Hindu diatribes against Muslims. These outbursts framed Hindus as India's supposed "orginary" inhabitants, casting Muslims as an invading race. Sectarian authors regularly speculated as the reproductive efficiency (or profligate dangers) of one or other religoius community.

Pillay was the honorary medical director for the Sholapur Society in 1929 and in 1931 he opened a Eugenics Clinic in Bombay. In 1934 Pillay launched Marriage Hygiene, a journal devoted exclusively to eugenics; in 1935, along with other Bombay professionals, he formed the Society for the Study and Promotion of Family Hygiene. In 1938, this society held the first All-India Conference on Family Hygiene in Bombay in conjunction with the All-India Conference on Population. And in 1940 in Bombay, the society merged with the Bhangini Samaj who were running a famiy planning who were running a family planning clinic run under the auspices of the AIWC, to become the Family Planning Society.

In 1949 this society became the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), founded by two women: Dhanvanthi Rama Rau (1893-1987) and Avabai Wadia (1913-2005) of the AIWC, with Pillay as the honorary medical advisor.

From 1952 the FPAI was allocated Indian government funds. Thus although family planning and population control were in the government of India's first Five Year Plan of 1952, it was a program pursued alongside substantial voluntary efforts. Also in 1952, the Indian government welcomed a Population control efforts created a new common-sense in (a smaller) ideal family size that cut across most groups, rich or poor. But it was the poor whose bodies bore the brunt of the state's attempts to reduce the aggregate rates of population growth.

Eugenics Society of India

WHAT is probably the first attempt to co-ordinate the efforts of a number of scientists to propagate the principles of Human genetics and Racial hygiene in India and to direct this for the betterment of the Indian population with a view to enhancing its surviving capacity in the struggle for existence, has been made in Bengal by a handful of scientific men who have started a society under the name of Indian Eugenics Society. How one wishes this attempt was made in a calmer atmosphere and when the human mind was free to think in terms of survival and betterment! Bitterness, racial animosity and strife are by no means congenial conditions for the growth of this sapling and one cannot but feel that this attempt is a very faint cry in a vast wilderness, ?a cry that will be heard by a few.

The first bulletin published by the Society has reached us. It is a small, attractively printed pamphlet with a foreword by the President of the Society, Dr. B. K. Chatterjee, who gives a brief history of the origin of the Society and puts forth a plea for the co-operation of scientists and workers all over India for the cause.

?The main article itself "The aims of objects of Eugenic researches in Bengal" is by the Secretary of the Society, Mr. S. S. Sarkar who has presented an admirable review of the Eugenic studies in that province. [Source]

Former NFL Star Aaron Hernandez Pens Letter From Jail, ?God Put Me In This Situation For A Reason?

shayanna-jenkins-aaron-hernandez-6

He has nothing else better to do.

When ninjas are behind bars facing years in jail, they find God real quick. God put you in jail for a reason, but why were you holding a gun on that surveillance footage? God always knows something we don?t.

According to TMZ

Aaron Hernandez wrote a pen pal a letter from inside his jail cell, declaring his innocence, saying his murder charges are God?s plan, and vowing to return to the NFL ? and TMZ has a copy.

We have verified with law enforcement the letter is the real deal. You can read it yourself ? among the highlights:

? ?The world just makes things out of false accusations ? and it will all die down, especially when they say NOT GUILTY?

? ?All the people who turned on me will feel like crap.?

? ?God put me in this situation for a reason.?

? ?Can?t wait to sign [autographs] again when I?m playing again an [sic] prove all the haters WRONG.?

As for the fan who received the letter, Karl ? he just called in to ?TMZ Live? and told us he wrote Hernandez first.

Karl says he sent the letter because he was in the same jail 15 years ago, and wanted to reach out to Hernandez to give him some encouragement.

Karl also says he would like to visit Aaron in jail ? if Aaron will let him.

FYI, Hernandez ? who?s been accused of murdering semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd ? has been denied bail and will remain behind bars until his trial.

British Gas to offer free energy to homeowners on Saturdays

In the UK, British Gas is planning to offer free energy to homeowners on Saturdays.

The company has proposed new tariff follows pressure from the government to ensure customers are getting the best deal.

It is hoped the plan will encourage people to use power-hungry devices like washing machines and tumble driers at the weekend, when demand for electricity from businesses is much lower.

A small trial is underway at the moment.

Train of Thought Derailed: How an Accident Can Affect Your Brain

A survivor of last week's deadly train derailment in Spain illustrates how disaster can alter your mind

Image: Flickr/elentir (Contando Estrelas)

My cousin Guillermo Cassinello Toscano was on the train that derailed in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, last week when it went around a bend at twice the speed limit. Cassinello heard a loud vibration and then a powerful bump and then found himself surrounded by bloody bodies in wagon number nine. Shaking, he escaped the wreckage through either a door or a hole in the train?he cannot recall?then sat amid the smoke and debris next to the track and began to cry. Seventy-nine passengers died.

Cassinello doesn?t remember everything that happened to him. The same mechanisms that kept his brain sharp enough to escape immediate danger may also make it harder for him both to recall the accident, and to put the trauma behind him. "The normal thing is that the person doesn't remember the moment of the accident or right after," says clinical psychologist Javier Rodriguez Escobar of trauma therapy team Grupo Isis in Seville, who helped treat and study victims of the 2004 Madrid train bombings. That's because the mind and the body enter a more alert but also more stressed state, with trade-offs that can save your life, but harm your mind?s memory-making abilities.

As the train fell over, several changes would have swept through Cassinello?s body. His adrenal glands, near his kidneys, would have released adrenaline (also known as epinephrine) into his bloodstream. The adrenaline would have directed blood to the powerful muscles of his arms and legs, where it would help him escape the wreckage faster. The hormone would have raised his heart and breathing rates. It also would have stimulated his vagus nerve, which runs from his spine to his brain. Although adrenaline cannot cross the blood?brain barrier, the vagus can promote noradrenaline production in the brain. That hormone activates the amygdala, which helps form memories.

Just the right amount of noradrenaline, researchers have found, can boost memory storage; too much can destroy it. Figuring out the balance could allow researchers to harness the hormone. Neuroscientist Christa McIntyre at the University of Texas at Dallas and colleagues have been studying how the chemical shapes memory-making in rats (her team is planning a human trial). When the team stimulated rats? vagus nerves the animals? memories improved. McIntyre has to keep the dose low, however, because other experiments have shown that too much noradrenaline appears to impede memory-making[OR, TO VARY: formation]. Researchers are still trying to determine whether the excess noradrenaline directly causes the memory lapses or if the hormone is associated with high stress levels that cause some other chemical system to interfere. "That's the part we don't really understand: if there's too much [noradrenaline] or if there's another system that kicks in and puts a brake on it," McIntyre says.

Cassinello's memory lapses may be due to a noradrenaline overflow. But there may be other explanations for the gaps in his memory. His brain may have narrowed his attention at the time of the crash to only those things that matter for survival, such as escaping the train, leading him to ignore things that do not, such as whether the path out of the train passed through a door or a hole. Researchers have shown that humans report selective hearing during stressful events and that stressed people pay attention to different things than do unstressed people (pdf).

Team Canada set for Celebration of Light fireworks

As many as 300,000 people are expected flock to the Celebration of Light fireworks competition Wednesday night, as Team Canada prepares to light up the sky over English Bay.

The show will be the second night of the annual musical fireworks competition and will see Team Canada present a fireworks display with "A Wonderful World/Into a Raging River" theme.

Canada face off against the UK and first-timers Thailand in this year's competition. Team UK presented their James Bond-themed show on Saturday, while Thailand will give its presentation Aug. 3.

Police presence

Const. Brian Montague says Vancouver police will once again be out in force on the ground and on the water, with hundreds of extra officers downtown to keep an eye on crowds and watch for people drinking in public.

The fireworks competition has an estimated annual attendance of 1.4 million people. The fireworks competition has an estimated annual attendance of 1.4 million people. (Conrad Olson)

"When you have people drinking and intoxicated in such a large crowd, it can become really problematic very quickly. We want to prevent those problems from happening in the first place," he said.

"We're trying to make sure that everyone feels safe in those large crowds."

Montague says there will be officers on foot, on bicycle, on ATVs and on horseback. Air One will also be in the air, monitoring the crowds.

Boaters warned

The VPD marine unit has also been out all day checking boats on the water, making sure boaters have operator cards, life jackets and working lights.

Sgt. Norm Webster said that's just one of the challenges.

"The other being people that aren't familiar with the area. There are charts available for all of the waterways leading into False Creek," he said.

Six boaters had a close call Saturday after the fireworks, when their vessel got stranded on rocks near Richmond. The family was later rescued.

The squad also impounded two vessels for impaired boating, and Webster is warning people not to drink and boat.

"Impaired operation of a motor vessel is the exact same as impaired operation of a vehicle. It is a criminal code offence and you will be arrested."

Police only arrested a few people for being intoxicated during Saturday's fireworks, but more than 600 people had their liquor poured out.

The West End will be closed to non-local traffic beginning around 7.30 p.m. Fireworks begin at 10 p.m..

Dallas Cowboys Safety Barry Church Forced to Miss Practice After Suffering Injury From Jolly Rancher

Barry Church

(Geoff Burke/USA Today Sports)

Unfortunately when it comes to professional sports, there are certain cases from time to time when athletes suffer some sort of bizarre injury. One of the latest victims of suffering a bizarre injury?Barry Church of the Dallas Cowboys.

Church missed practice on Monday and while it?s easy to assume the type of injury came from drills on the football field, the safety?s injury actually came from a jolly rancher. No, that is not a typo as Church missed practice on Monday in order to undergo a root canal after a cherry flavored Jolly Rancher chipped his tooth a couple of weeks before.

As funny as this type of injury is considering nobody would expect a player to miss practice from a jolly rancher in a million years, the Cowboys should consider themselves lucky that Church didn?t suffer a more serious injury. Luckily, everything turned out just fine and this is one of those situations Church and his teammates can just laugh about.

On another note to all of the professional athletes ?note to all professional athletes out there?protect your teeth and be careful with the type of candy you eat. As Church showed us this week, you never know what type of damage can be caused just from eating candy?even something as small as a jolly rancher.

There?s been plenty of injuries during training camp so far, but this one by Church that forced him to miss practice is by far the most crazy one and it will be difficult for any other football player to top it.

El Reno stockyard auctions return after tornado

BY CARMEN FORMAN cforman@opubco.com ? Modified: July 31, 2013 at 4:00 pm ? Published: July 30, 2013

Thunder rumbling, rain pinging against the metal building and sporadic power outages at Monday's OKC West Stockyards cattle auction, were eerily reminiscent of May 31, but this time there was no tornado.

Monday's auction was the second since the business was destroyed in the EF5 tornado, said Bill Barnhart, OKC West managing partner.

The auction house opened in 1989 and takes cattle on consignment and cleans, sorts and sells them.

Thirteen people and 160 cows were on the property when the tornado came rolling through. All humans and cows survived, but the business' four buildings were demolished.

?Good Lord ordered a remodel, so we're going to remodel,? Barnhart said.

Barnhart also decided to make some improvements.

Since his employees had to find creative hiding places from the storm such as under a stairwell in the restaurant or under the cow-weighing machine, Barnhart decided to install a storm shelter in the new arena, employee Sonny Barthold said.

Improvements also included newer camera equipment to film proceedings for the online audience. The auctions are posted on the Internet in a live-stream so people at home or at work can bid on cattle.

?Bill took this on like a war and he won this war,? Barthold said. ?If you've got to go to battle, you want him on your side.?

Two of the four buildings at OKC West have been rebuilt. It was essential to rebuild the arena and feed barn in order to get back to business, Barnhart said. Until the office building and truck wash are rebuilt, offices have been temporarily moved to the back of the arena.

Hours of networking and combing the classifieds and Internet postings don?t necessarily lead to that perfect slot, and ? speaking from experience ? it can feel discouraging. It?s easy to become overwhelmed by the deluge of news about unemployment or to sense that our skill-sets are outmoded, even obsolete.

It?s easy to get caught up in listening to these negative scenarios ? but whatever the arguments or forces that seem stacked against us, God has a unique place and an ongoing usefulness for each of us. He has designed us for the fulfillment of His infinite and diverse purposes. And there is always a divine and unerring voice that thunders directly ? to set us back on course.

Many years ago, we were living in a rural area in northern California. My husband occasionally found employment doing small home remodeling projects, and I had been working in real estate. Both professions were very slow and quiet over the winter months. As we came off a recent chapter, in which we had closed down a restaurant venture, our careers seemed at a standstill.

I finally resolved one day to retreat to the Reading Room of our small town?s Christian Science Society. I wanted to shut out all the negatives, while quietly praying and listening until I could hear an answer. The?Christian Science Bible Lesson that week focused on those ancients who often heard God?s word directly, described even as a thundering voice: ?God thundereth marvellously with his voice? (Job 37:5).

When God needed to get Moses? attention, a bush flamed in the desert, and a voice distinctly called his name (see Exodus, chap. 3). The call directed Moses to a new mission and purpose. He was to leave his humble occupation as a shepherd, and lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. Moses didn?t dream up this radical career shift, nor did he find it on the Internet. God revealed it to him directly, showing him that he was uniquely qualified for this pioneering demand. Our individual directives may not come on such a grand scale, but the employment shifts can feel just as unexpected and radical.

I left the Reading Room that day at peace. I felt a conviction that the import of these spiritual illuminations and career redirections were not just biblical history ? but present-day fact. Like Moses, each of us can humbly turn aside at our own burning bush. We can drop our mortal r?sum?s and histories, and expectantly listen for whatever redirection might be demanded of us. We can expect to hear that ?thundering voice.? I became convinced that my husband, too, could hear whatever message he needed for forward momentum.

When I returned home, my husband greeted me with, ?You?ll never guess what I heard on the radio today.? He proceeded to describe an unusual job announcement posted by a nonprofit venture some 100 miles away. They were searching for a couple with an unusual skill-set: restaurant and hotel management experience, handyman skills, marketing and public relations, retail and customer service, and some boating know-how.

The job ? lighthouse keepers!

Between us, we met all the requirements for this post as bed and breakfast innkeepers at a historical lighthouse on a tiny island in the San Francisco Bay. Never in a hundred years could we have envisioned such a calling. Although some 250 couples applied for the post, we were not intimidated by the numbers. Because of the way the announcement came to us, through that ?thundering voice,? it felt as if the job was pre-scripted for us. And so it proved to be when we were hired.

Many years have passed since that high-adventure chapter in our lives. But it remains a beacon reminder whenever I feel stymied by an impasse. It?s a reminder to drop worrying and outlining, to tune in quietly to the all-knowing Mind, and listen expectantly. The thundering voice is always speaking, waiting only for our undivided attention. If the voice demands a 180-degree directional shift, we can trust that divine Mind has been preparing us for it. If we need to acquire new skills, the opportunity to learn will be provided. Gently and persistently the voice commands our forward momentum. In the words of Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, ?[P]rogress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 233).

It is not God?s will that any one of us ? as His infinite idea ? should be stagnant, defeated, or unproductive. Divine Love orchestrates a free-flow of unfolding good. We cannot be left out, forced out, or opt out of this Life force. Tuning in to the thundering voice, we can hear it, follow it, and carry out its directives.

Here's an overview of the Facebook advertising ecosystem:

  • Facebook has rolled out many different ad products over the last year:?Facebook now offers at least seven major ways to advertise, including brand pages, display ads, sponsored stories (which are being phased out), promoted posts, page post ads, mobile app install ads, and log-out screen ads. Each of these ad products has their own benefits, but there are a ?handful of additional products and concepts that are key to understanding Facebook's advertising ecosystem, including...
  • Custom Audiences: Marketers can use the offline customer data they already have to find past or existing customers on Facebook. Then they can target these consumers on Facebook with ads. An extension to Custom Audiences, Lookalike Audiences, uses the same data to help companies find prospective customers on Facebook.?
  • Partner Categories:?This is another tool that helps marketers leverage offline data. Let's say you are a mom-and-pop shop and don't have your own data to use Custom Audiences and make a highly-targeted ad buy. Facebook?offers the third-party data of a few vendors?to help you find your target audience on Facebook.?
  • CPA: This acronym means Cost-Per-Action, which is a new pricing method Facebook introduced last month. Instead of paying in the standard ways for per-click, or an impression basis, advertisers can pay for a certain number of Likes, Link Clicks (these are clicks on a specific link, not the whole ad), or Offer Claims. Along with Custom Audiences and Partner Categories, CPA is meant to help attract performance-oriented marketers to Facebook?? as opposed to brand marketers, who often simply go for reach.?
  • FBX:?Facebook is moving steadily into the world of data-enriched, real-time digital ad sales.?Facebook Exchange or FBX is an ad exchange?that allows advertisers to serve ads to users on Facebook based on past actions they have taken online, like shop for an airline ticket.

CoolApps will not sync from Google play following device reset
My handset has been returned following a warranty repair, as part of this they've had to factory reset the device (no issues there). However, my apps are not syncing from Google Play when logging into the Play store with my google account. I'm connected on Wi-Fi and have Sync 'on' from the pull down menu. I've got quite a few apps and don't want to install manually again, the technology is there to assist! Running 4.1.2.

Any idea's please? Thanks in advance!

Anthony Weiner's campaign manager calls it quits amid new revelations

Sunday brought more bad news for New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner as his campaign manager resigned and poll numbers continue to plummet. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

By Daniel Arkin, Staff Writer, NBC News

Anthony Weiner?s campaign manager has quit in the wake of new revelations about the New York City mayoral candidate's online communications with women, according to a spokeswoman.

The move was first reported by The New York Times late Saturday and confirmed to NBC News by Barbara Morgan, Weiner?s press contact.

Danny Kedem, 31, informed Weiner that he could no longer run day-to-day operations after the mayoral hopeful admitted Tuesday that he continued to send raunchy photos and messages to women after resigning from Congress in 2011 amid a "sexting" scandal, according to the Times report.

When contacted by NBC News, Kedem declined to comment.

Kedem?s resignation deals another blow to Weiner?s beleagured campaign, which has struggled to rebound in the polls following the candidate?s disclosures in the last week.

On Tuesday, Weiner confessed to explicit communications with six to ten women ? three of them after he resigned ? after a gossip website published texts and photos it said were from 2012.

Eduardo Munoz / Reuters

Former U.S. congressman from New York and current Democratic candidate for New York City Mayor Anthony Weiner stops to speak to the media outside after speaking to members of Brownsville Community Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York on July 28.

At a press conference Tuesday, Weiner ? accompanied by his wife, Huma Abedin, an aide to Hillary Clinton ? apologized and asked voters for a second chance.

?Some of these things happened before my resignation. Some of them happened after,? Weiner said.

?While some things that have been posted today are true and some are not, there is no question that what I did was wrong. This behavior is behind me,? he said, calling his digital indiscretions ?problematic to say the least and destructive to say the most.?

On Monday, the gossip website The Dirty claimed that Weiner, allegedly using the alias ?Carlos Danger,? met an unnamed 22-year-old woman on the social media website Formspring in July 2012, sent her explicit photos and had phone sex with her before the relationship ?fizzled.?

Weiner, a six-term congressman who represented the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, resigned in disgrace in June 2011 after it was revealed he sent a photo of himself in his underwear to a woman via Twitter.

Danny Kadem, Anthony Weiner's campaign manager, has stepped down after the candidate's most recent publicity regarding his behavior online, according to The New York Times. TODAY's Erica Holt interviews David Gregory of NBC's "Meet the Press" about the impact this could have on Weiner's campaign.

He initially denied it was him in the photo or that he sent it, but Weiner eventually came clean, confessing that he had carried on ?inappropriate? conversations through Twitter, Facebook, email and over the phone with six women over a three-year period.

And yet, less than two years after a stunning fall from grace, Weiner, 48, appeared to be in the midst of a comeback.

Two months after he announced his return to the political stage, he was near or at the top in several polls in the race to replace Michael Bloomberg, eclipsing New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who was widely considered the frontrunner.

Kedem was likely a key ingredient in Weiner's successful formula, helping to transform the long-shot candidate -- a mainstay of tabloid headlines and late-night talk show punchlines -- into a legitimate contender for New York City's top job.

Weiner has not indicated that he will drop out of the race.

Views on abortion in US: regional differences grow wider

Opposition to abortion in the South has grown markedly in the past 20 years even as other parts of the nation ? such as New England ? have seen support rise, reflecting political polarization.

By Linda Feldmann,?Staff writer / July 29, 2013

Abortion rights supporters demonstrate outside the Capitol auditorium in Austin, Texas, as Gov. Rick Perry (R) signs sweeping new abortion restrictions earlier this month. The South Central region of the US has seen significant growth in opposition to abortion since 1995, according to a new Pew poll.

Jay Janner/Austin American-Statesman/AP/File

Opinion on abortion in the United States has held mostly steady for the past two decades, but regional differences are widening, according to the Pew Research Center.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

That growing regional divide comes as many of the states in conservative regions add new laws regulating abortion doctors and clinics. In particular, the South Central region ? Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas ? has seen significant growth in opposition to abortion since 1995, Pew found.

?The most important trend in this report is that the balance has flipped? in the South Central part of the country, says Carroll Doherty, associate director of the Pew Research Center. ?You always saw less support for legal abortion in South Central, but since the '90s, it?s flipped from modestly in favor to 12 points against.?

In that region, 40 percent of adults surveyed in 2012 and 2013 said abortion should be legal in all or most cases, versus 52 percent who said it should be illegal in all or most cases. In 1995 and 1996, 52 percent of Southerners supported abortion rights in all or most cases and 45 percent said abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.

Exactly why that shift has occurred is open to conjecture. Some analysts point to technology, such as growing use of sonograms early in pregnancy, as one explanation. The South has long been known for its high levels of religiosity, particularly evangelical Christianity.

The growing polarization of views on abortion also reflects the polarization of politics in the US between red and blue states, and in Congress.

Swimming: China's Sun adds world 400m gold to Olympic crown

BARCELONA: Olympic champion Sun Yang of China claimed men's 400m freestyle gold at swimming's world championships in Sunday's final to complete the set of major titles in the event.

Just as he did in the London 2012 final, the 21-year-old Chinese dominated early on in Barcelona to add the 400m world title to the 800m and 1500m freestyle gold medals he won two years ago in Shanghai.

Sun clocked 3min 41.59sec, finishing more than three seconds ahead of Japan's Kosuke Hagino, who swam 3:44.82, while Connor Jaeger of the USA finished in 3:44.85 to claim third.

"I give thanks to my coach and my parents," said an emotional Sun, who has moved his training base to Hong Kong in the last year.

"I have been training for this for the past 10 years and it has paid off."

Sun has had a turbulent 12 months since his London triumph after a row with his coach over the giant swimmer's love affair with an air stewardess.

Sun, the tall distance specialist from Zhejiang, rejected coach Zhu Zhigen's demand that he stop seeing his new girlfriend and concentrate on his swimming instead.

Despite a public show of reconciliation with Zhu, Sun has been training in Hong Kong under former Chinese head coach Zhang Yadong.

"Over the last year, I have experienced a lot of new things and I still managed to win the gold medal," said Sun.

"I have overcame many problems and proved myself tonight.

"I am very satisfied with my performance and I hope to have an even better performance in my other events."

At the halfway stage, Sun was on track to break Paul Biedermann's world record of 3:40.07, set four years ago at the Rome world championships, but the German ultimately holds on to the mark set using the now-banned high-tech suits.

After Sun finished second in the 400m freestyle at the Shanghai 2011 world championships, the 1500m freestyle world record-holder will be aiming to defend his 800m freestyle crown when the heats start on Tuesday.

Japanese teenager Hagino, who won Olympc 400m individual medley bronze in London last year, was not happy with his time, but delighted with his silver.

"It?s a really tough challenge for me, but I am trying to do my best and hopefully I will get a few more medals," said the 18-year-old Hagino, who won five titles at this year's Japanese national championships.

Bronze-winner Jaeger, 22, said he had endured a steep learning curve en route to claiming his first medal at a major event.

"I was in a pretty slow heat and I learned a lesson from that, you're never safe just because you win your heat," he said.

"There was a minute I didn't even think I'd get another swim, so I just went into the final with a lot of energy and enthusiasm and that turned into a great result."

Party of PM Hun Sen wins Cambodian election, majority slashed

By Prak Chan Thul

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodia's ruling party won Sunday's general election but with a much-reduced majority, according to the government, a result that will be seen as a setback for authoritarian leader Hun Sen, one of the world's longest-serving prime ministers.

Khieu Kanharith, government spokesman and information minister, said on his Facebook page the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won 68 seats in parliament to the opposition's 55, adding that was the final count.

The National Election Committee (NEC) gave a list of results from each polling station but no tally for parliamentary seats.

Backed by a compliant media and with superior resources, the CPP was confident of victory, but analysts had predicted a reduction in its majority after the merger of two main opposition parties plus the return from self-imposed exile of popular long-time opposition leader Sam Rainsy.

While not formally conceding defeat for his Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), Sam Rainsy was conciliatory and called for calm after what were significant gains for the party.

"We want to thank all Cambodian people ... regardless of their political affiliation, Cambodians who support all political parties, for their dignified participation in this election, for their contribution to make democracy move forward," he told a news briefing.

The CPP had 90 of the 123 seats in the outgoing parliament and the parties that united to form the CNRP had just 29.

Sam Rainsy appealed to his youthful supporters not to cause any trouble. "We call for peace and reconciliation," he said.

Military police blocked off a road leading to the home of Hun Sen, who has been in power for 28 years, and one going to the offices of the CPP and the NEC.

Trucks carrying soldiers were seen going into the city but by late evening the streets were calm.

Earlier, in a highly charged atmosphere, an angry crowd had set fire to two police cars outside a polling station, a Reuters photographer said.

However, voting, like the campaign itself, was for the most part peaceful despite anger at alleged electoral fraud.

Sam Rainsy's party claimed electoral lists were manipulated to give the CPP more votes and complained about the disruption of meetings and campaigning by the security forces for Hun Sen.

"The partisanship of the military and police has created an intimidating atmosphere for voters in many parts of the country," U.S.-based Human Rights Watch said in a statement ahead of the poll.

ROCKY PATH TO STABILITY

The United Nations organized an election in 1993 that put Cambodia on a rocky path towards stability after decades of turmoil, including the 1975-79 "Killing Fields" rule of the communist Khmer Rouge.

Under Hun Sen, a former junior commander in the Khmer Rouge who broke away during their rule, Cambodia has been transformed into one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing economies, helped by garment exports plus aid money and investment from China.

But economic growth has been accompanied by a rise in social tension over poor factory conditions and rural land rights in a country of 14 million where a third of the people live on less than 65 U.S. cents a day.

Before a royal pardon this month, Sam Rainsy had faced a jail sentence handed down in 2010 for spreading disinformation and falsifying maps to contest a new border agreed with Vietnam, charges he called politically motivated.

He returned too late to run in the election or even to vote, and the electoral authorities rejected his request to do so.

But the charismatic former finance minister had attracted large crowds to rallies, appealing to younger voters with no memory of the turmoil before Hun Sen helped restore stability.

At one polling station set up at a pagoda in Phnom Penh, 29-year-old Khat Sreynit said she wanted a better country and jobs for university graduates. "And also that people have a living wage," she said, before rushing into the crowd to get a glimpse of Sam Rainsy, who had turned up there.

A 70-year-old voter clutching an ID card declined to give her name but said: "This election is important for the country. I have always voted before, since 1993, I voted for living conditions and the country." She paid little attention to Sam Rainsy's arrival.

Golf: Hunter Mahan takes Canadian Open lead

Golf ? Bogey-free round puts him up by two shots in Canadian Open.

Oakville, Ontario ? Hunter Mahan birdied the final three holes Friday for an 8-under 64 and a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Canadian Open.

Coming off a ninth-place tie last week in the British Open, the five-time PGA Tour winner had eight birdies in his bogey-free round at Glen Abbey to reach 13-under 131.

"I kind of built off last week," Mahan said. "I got some good things I?m doing with my swing and everything, and feel good about that. I?m just going out there and really trying to trust my game.

"Just allow things to happen and not get in the way of myself and be as present as I can and keep my head up and keep moving forward and just kind of letting my abilities and everything that I?m doing in my game, let it try to come out."

John Merrick was second after a 62. He tied the course record set by Leonard Thompson in 1981 and matched by Andy Bean in 1983 ? both when Glen Abbey played to a par of 71 ? and Greg Norman in 1986.

Merrick had an eagle and 10 birdies, playing the back nine in 6-under 31.

"It was a great day," Merrick said. "I got off to a good start, hit it over the green on 2 and chipped in for eagle, and that kind of calmed me down. ... I hit it well and made a lot of putts."

He won the Northern Trust Open in February at Riviera for his first PGA Tour title.

"I?ve had stretches of good play," Merrick said. "You know, it?s tough out here. It?s competitive. You?ve got to be on for four days, and I?ve had some good rounds here and there a couple days, and you just need to put four rounds together out here. My game has been feeling pretty good. Everything kind of clicked today."

Bubba Watson was 9 under after a 67.

"I haven?t been in too much trouble," Watson said. "When I hit it in the rough I have a decent lie or miss it in the right spot so I can hit the green in regulation. I missed three greens in two days, so I?m just hitting my irons well, playing smart golf, and then I made a few putts."

Mike Weir, who lives in Sandy, Utah, was the top Canadian, following his opening 73 with a 67 to move into a tie for 26th at 4 under.

Senior British Open

Mark Wiebe of the United States shot a 5-under 65 Friday to share the lead with Bernhard Langer after the second round of the Senior British Open at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England.

Wiebe had four birdies on the back nine. Langer, the 2010 champion at Carnoustie, shot a 67 and made five birdies. Both players finished at 5-under 135.

Web.com Tour

Russell Knox shot the fifth 59 in Web.com Tour history Friday, missing a chance to break the tour record when he parred the final two holes in the second round of the Boise Open.

The 28-year-old Scot had two eagles and eight birdies in his bogey-free round at 6,807-yard, par-71 Hillcrest Country Club. He made a 7-foot par putt on his final hole, the par-4 ninth.
