Earnings Preview: Shell to report Q3 results

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? Royal Dutch Shell PLC reports third quarter earnings before European markets open on Thursday.

Analysts expect profits at Europe's largest oil company by market capitalization to fall by 10-20 percent, due mostly to sharply weaker natural gas prices in North America compared with the third quarter of 2011.

Shell has been investing heavily in new capacity, and analysts will be looking at whether a number of new projects the company has been bringing on line are boosting production as promised. In the third quarter of 2011, Shell pumped 3.01 million barrels of oil and equivalents per day.

In addition, Shell will be reporting on what progress, if any, it made in drilling off the coast of Alaska amid difficult weather in the late summer. The company has invested more than $4 billion in obtaining U.S. licenses and building equipment to seek oil in the Arctic circle, despite opposition from environmental groups.

On Tuesday, Shell's biggest European rival, BP, reported better-than-expected earnings, excluding one-off gains, of $5.2 billion, down from $5.5 billion in the third quarter of 2011.

Shell's shares were flat in the third quarter and were down 5.7 percent for the year as of Wednesday.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts surveyed by ThomsonReuters expect net earnings of $6.31 billion, or $1.93 per share, excluding one-time gains.

LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: The Hague, Netherlands-based Shell reported earnings of $7.25 billion on the same basis, or $2.24 per share, in the third quarter of 2011.

A Morphing Storm: As Sandy Moves Inland, Snow And Winds Follow

An ambulance is stuck in over a foot of snow off of Highway 33 West, near Belington, W.Va. on Oct. 30. Superstorm Sandy buried parts of West Virginia under more than a foot of snow.

Robert Ray/AP i

Even though Sandy has switched from hurricane to post-tropical cyclone, it's still a formidable storm. The latest forecast predicts strong winds and coastal storm surges up to four feet in some places. Areas from the eastern Great Lakes region to the mid-Atlantic and up to southern New England can also expect an additional inch of rain.

And NPR's Dan Charles reports from Beckley, W. Va., that there's at least a foot of snow on the ground there, and more on the way.

The mid-Atlantic region is no stranger to hurricanes, but as Sandy made its way north and onto land, it became far more wintery.

Hurricanes draw their power and energy from the heat of ocean water, releasing it high in the atmosphere. It's this transport of heat that keeps the system spinning in the characteristic counter-clockwise direction.

As Sandy moved north and turned westward toward land, it collided with cold air making its way south from Canada. The huge, rotating storm began drawing this cold air into its cyclonic path, driving it farther south. That's why we're now seeing snow in places like Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia.

The National Weather Service points out that winter storms can spin around like a hurricane does, but there's a key difference between a wintertime cyclone and a hurricane (one type of tropical cyclone). Winter cyclones draw their energy from differences in temperature and pressure in the atmosphere, not from ocean heat.

What continues to make Sandy so powerful is its broad diameter ? more than 1,000 miles ? and its union with the winter storm descending from Canada.

Blizzard warnings remain in effect in the higher elevations of the central Appalachians. Charles reports the heavy, wet snow is breaking tree branches and downing power lines as wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour continue to lash the region.

Sudan dreams big with new airports despite crashes

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - After a Sudanese plane crashed at Khartoum's international airport last year, authorities didn't slow plans to build new airports and add more routes. They used the incident to shoot a video showing how safe flying in Sudan is, thanks to its skillful pilots.

"Tower, the wheels are jammed. What shall I do?" the pilot says in the film, replaying for the cameras how he circled for an hour above Khartoum to empty his fuel talks while workers flooded the runway with foam.

As news that the plane was in trouble spread around the city on October 2 last year, hundreds of people rushed to the airport to watch anxiously as the ageing Fokker landed with its wheels up.

It turned on its side but all 45 passengers survived, the advertising video being produced by the civil aviation authority proudly states. A preliminary version of the film was seen by Reuters before its public release.

Sudan has been hit by a string of aviation accidents in the past several years; authorities have registered about 10 safety incidents in the last two years, airline experts told a workshop organised by the aviation authority last month.

In early October a Sudanese military plane crashed near Khartoum, killing 15 people. In August, 32 people including a government minister died when a civilian plane crashed in the south of the country. A Sudan Airways cargo plane crashed while taking off in the United Arab Emirates in 2009, and a cargo plane crashed shortly after take-off from Khartoum in 2008.

Sudan's airlines have struggled to obtain modern planes and spare parts because of a U.S. trade embargo, initially imposed in 1997 over the country's past hosting of militant Islamists, and a shortage of foreign exchange. Airbus, Boeing and most maintenance firms have refused to deal with the country.

But the aviation sector has nevertheless been growing strongly, a rare bright spot in an economy which has been ravaged by wars, ethnic conflicts and last year's separation from the country of South Sudan, which took much of Sudan's oil reserves when it became independent.

Passenger numbers have risen to 2.8 million annually from 1.8 million 2-1/2 years ago, said Mohammed Abdelaziz, head of the civil aviation authority.

"We expect more growth in coming years," he said, predicting that by 2023 Sudan would have 7 million passengers annually. An immediate fillip will come from a September deal with South Sudan to resume oil shipments through Sudanese territory and cross-border trade, a lifeline for both countries.

AIRPORTS

To serve its rising traffic, Sudan plans to build a new airport for Khartoum after its main trade partner China agreed to fund and execute a first construction phase costing $700 million, Abdelaziz said.

"Work will start at the beginning of next year," he said, adding that the remaining $600 million required would be raised through build-and-operate contracts, under which companies building the airport would be able to earn their fees from operating its facilities.

The new airport, designed for an annual capacity of 7 million passengers, is to be ready in three years.

The project, on the drawing board for many years, is overdue, and not just for capacity reasons. The current airport, built by British colonial rulers in the 1950s, has a short runway and lies in the heart of the capital, which is a risk for local residents given the accidents.

"Foreign airlines have habitually complained the runway in the old airport is too short, a disadvantage that results in greater wear on tyres and brakes," said Magdi El Gizouli, a fellow at the Rift Valley Institute, a consultancy.

Much of Sudan's passenger growth comes from domestic carriers which lease used Airbus or Russian planes from other airlines to serve the vast country, where no passenger railway exists and trips by road can take days.

In addition to Khartoum, Sudan is building three airports including one at Wadi Halfa at the Egyptian border. The oil deal with South Sudan has reopened air traffic between the two nations, a big source of revenue for local airlines since South Sudan does not have its own carrier and has few paved roads.

"They make good money with cargo as it is much easier to transport goods to the South by air than on roads, especially in the rainy season," said Sheikh El-Din Abdallah, secretary general of the National Chamber of Air Transport, an industry body.

Three Sudanese carriers offer daily flights to the Southern capital Juba, which will also get a new airport courtesy of China.

Despite the rising traffic, local airlines struggle financially because they pay a premium for spare parts from the few firms dealing with Sudan.

"You get spare parts from firms in South Africa which charge you two times the market price or more," Abdallah said, adding that high taxes in Sudan were also a burden.

MUCH TO ENDURE

Passengers in Sudan have much to endure, not just crashes. To avoid operating losses, airlines often cancel flights on "technical grounds" if flights are not fully booked.

State-owned carrier Sudan Airways, known for its delays, has lost out to new carriers offering better service. Rival Marsland Aviation, which is privately owned, claims a 65 percent market share on domestic routes, according to its website.

Khartoum's airport has been in decay for years, with many passenger information systems and stairways out of service because of the country's shortage of dollars to buy spare parts.

The packed Sudan Airways workshop at Khartoum airport looks like a museum; broken-down planes queue outside, some of them stranded there for a year.

There are positive signs, however. Facing public outrage, officials have overhauled the civil aviation body by splitting off supervision in line with global standards. Passenger and baggage security checks have visibly improved in the past several months. Signs banning people not travelling from the Khartoum airport's passenger lounges have been put up in the past few weeks.

"Monitoring will now improve. They take civil aviation affairs more seriously," said Mohammed Khonji, Middle East head of the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

And Sudan Airways has noble traditions. One of Africa's oldest carriers, it used to fly to London and Frankfurt until the European Union banned it over its safety record. Sudanese pilots were once in high demand because of their experience, helping other Arab carriers to get started, before Sudan went into isolation in the 1990s as the U.S. embargo was imposed.

But the drive to strengthen the aviation sector comes as Sudan's links to the global airline network look increasingly shaky. Only about 14 foreign carriers fly to Khartoum, mostly from neighbouring Arab or African countries; Germany's Lufthansa and Dutch carrier KLM are the only Western airlines.

Some foreign carriers have halted or reduced flights because the government requires them to sell tickets in local currency, which they cannot easily convert into dollars because of exchange controls.

Most airlines have sharply raised ticket prices since Sudan devalued its pound this summer. New trouble looms as authorities plan to charge foreign firms in dollars for jet fuel.

"Foreign airlines don't really make much money here these days but could at least spend their pounds from ticket sales to fund the return trip," said a Western diplomat. "If this new policy gets enforced, then most will stop flying here."

Some Exhibits at Natural History Museum Are Only Seen by Researchers

Michael Nagle for The New York Times

COLD STORAGE At the American Museum of Natural History, George Amato reached into a vat, cooled by liquid nitrogen, holding vials of tissue samples.

George Amato climbs a step and lifts the lid on a shiny stainless steel vessel that is basically a tall, portly thermos bottle. Clouds swirl off liquid nitrogen inside, making the tank look like a high-tech witch?s caldron.

This vessel and the others in the room hold some of the least-imposing exhibits in the American Museum of Natural History, the sprawling, 143-year-old complex on Manhattan?s Upper West Side.

Inside the vessels are tall racks that hold small boxes; each box contains dozens of plastic vials; each vial contains a tissue sample, and all of it is preserved at minus 160 degrees Celsius. The museum has collected 70,000 of these vials from 40,000 animal species since the Ambrose Monell Cryo Collection opened in 2001.

?There is no other tissue bank that has the overall diversity of life represented here,? said Dr. Amato, director of the museum?s Sackler Institute for Comparative Genomics.

Few visitors to the museum would be likely to want to see the little bar-coded vials. They lack the grandeur of the rearing Barosaurus skeleton in the Roosevelt Rotunda or the 94-foot model of a blue whale. Those can be found in the vast public spaces of the museum?s complex of 26 buildings; the Monell collection sits in a basement room next to the carpentry shop.

The samples in the mist are part of more than 32 million biological specimens and cultural artifacts owned by the museum, only a tiny fraction of which are seen by the public. Their purpose is not to educate and entertain visitors, but to further the museum?s role as one of the world?s leading research institutions, with more than 200 scientists on board. This is the museum?s less-known life, but one that goes back to its founding in 1869.

Anesthetized by visits to museums that have more in common with amusement parks than with research centers, most visitors would be surprised to find that the American Museum of Natural History grants graduate degrees to scientists who work within its walls. Facilities like the Monell collection show how the scientific work undertaken at the museum has broadened over the years: what started with avid collecting, comparing and drawing of specimens, skeletons, feathers and skin now involves DNA sequencing, CT scanning and high-powered computational analysis.

The office of Michael J. Novacek, provost of science at the museum, shows the blending of old and new. The outer wall of the office is curved, tucked into one of the seemingly ancient towers at a corner of the building. On his desk is a big-screen iMac computer displaying a project the museum is engaged in under a multimillion-dollar grant from the National Science Foundation, a database known as the MorphoBank.

The database turns morphology ? the study of the form and structure of organisms to discern the evolutionary relationships among them ? into a social media endeavor that incorporates physical characteristics, genetic expression and environmental factors to more fully describe ?the tree of life,? Dr. Novacek said. As he gazes at a screen filled with information about the anatomy of elephants, he notices that a colleague in England has added an image and filled in accompanying information about it.

?It changes the way people work, it changes the way people collaborate, and it really shoots science ahead,? he said.

And, he added, projects like this mean that the museum?s scientific resources are open to the world. ?It?s as if we took these 32 million things ? specimens, tissues and artifacts ? and opened a window on them,? he said. ?It?s not just on display in an exhibit or sitting in a drawer in the corner of the museum.?

These resources will eventually be accessible to schoolchildren and the general public in formats they can understand and use, he predicted. The hundreds of schoolchildren waiting at a nearby subway stop to enter the museum may not know about the online world of the collections, he said, but ?they will know this.?

For now, he notes, the rich scientific work of the museum goes largely unnoticed outside the scientific community. Dinosaurs, meteorites, the hominid Lucy and the Star of India sapphire get the spotlight. ?In some ways, we?re victims of our own success,? he said. ?The objects are so amazing.?

The museum now looks at its objects differently, with tools that include scanning electron microscopes and a CT scanner that allow magnification and imagery that seem the stuff of science fiction ? or nightmares. Scientists can study the hairs and carapaces of insects, wear patterns on ancient rock tools from Kenya or the inscription on a sword that has fused with its sheath. In the room that houses the CT scanner, a table is crowded with jars containing snakelike creatures preserved in alcohol, ready for their extreme close-ups.

Underlying the museum?s research efforts is computational power that is now beginning to tackle some of the tough problems of sorting through enormous amounts of data for comparison, pattern recognition and analysis. That is the work of Ward Wheeler, whose banks of clustered computers sit in the museum?s basement around a corner from the cryo lab.

Hurricane Sandy Viral Photos ? For Better or For Worse, What You ...

Just like all of you, I spend a sizeable portion of my day with Facebook open in one of the many tabs of my Google Chrome browser. I do it for work; other typical explanations include social media addiction, boredom, or a bad case of the Mondays. Either way, I?m confident that a great majority of people that spent any time on social media on Monday caught a great deal of images, comments, posts, updates, and tweets related to Hurricane Sandy.

Among all the hullabaloo there were several images that began to circulate rather quickly, including an inundated Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and various New York City skylines cowering under ominous-looking masses of cloud. As it turns out, most of these images are fake. Not fake as in they never happened fake ? fake as in, those photos had nothing to do with Hurricane Sandy fake.

Amazing, inspiring, fake photos.

This image was actually a normal picture of the Statue of Liberty, Photoshopped against the background of a 2004 Nebraska storm.

People share viral pieces for different reasons. We?ve all had the ?Oh, you haven?t seen _______ yet? You have to check it out!? conversation. The very point of social media is to share compelling content with our friends (both literal and metaphorical), and that won?t change. But with the sensationalistic and incorrect information that gains legs during this kind of huge story, how do users start shaking out the details? More importantly, does a willingness to instantly share a doctored photo reflect poorly on your own (or, Heaven forbid, your business?s) credibility?

It wasn?t long after the first round of photos circulated through the interwebs that articles began to identify these photos as the phonies that they were. I?ll be honest?? I saw some of the photos on my own feed and thought they were fantastic. It didn?t even cross my mind that they were fake.

This image was taken from the poster for the 2004 environmental disaster film The Day After Tomorrow.

Here?s where the social Internet?s famed capacity for instantaneous reaction kicks in and things get interesting. Those who resisted the allure of the initial photo insta-share were all too happy to spread the damning info, and those who initially shared the photos suffered the e-stigma of falling for a hoax ??followers of the accounts who spread the tainted photos are surely feeling exasperated at their friends? willingness to hop on the bandwagon. As in the Kony 2012 debacle, sensationalistic content is tempting to share, but if it turns out to be false your followers may have a real problem with your willingness to mislead them. Love it or hate it, the Internet is a breeding ground for high-speed rumor-mongering, but we?re now also allowed high-speed debunking ? which can lead to a crucial loss of credibility in your networks.

Does the question of journalistic responsibility come into play with regard to such a disconnected network as the social media sphere? Can we just assume that eventually the truth will prevail? The actual source often becomes so removed from the images that go viral that it?s hard to tell what?s what. Some will always be quick to share, and others quick to skepticism. While news stories of this magnitude offer an unparalleled opportunity for organic, viral sharing, it?s important to remember that the Internet?s capacity for tweaking or losing the truth entirely is mighty ? if you try to harness the power of a breaking news story, pay attention to your sources or you may find yourself losing social (media) capital.

What fake viral media has affected you recently? Have you found yourself unwittingly sharing a less-than-veritable tidbit, and what were your followers? reactions?

Above Politics

Early voters fill out their ballots in Miami, Florida as they cast their vote in the presidential election on the first day of early voting on Saturday.

Early voters in Miami on Saturday

The Supreme Court on Monday punted on whether to hear a major challenge to part of the Voting Rights Act. They will probably still hear the case this term, but they just have put off saying so. The justices? nondecision decision is perfectly in keeping with the low profile they have managed to keep in the 2012 election. The presidential contest will almost certainly be crucial for the future of the court and the judiciary as a whole. Which means it will be crucial for the shape that American law takes. And yet we?ve barely heard a peep about the courts from Barack Obama or Mitt Romney. How have judges escaped the role of lightning rod (or maybe today I should say hurricane)?

By my count, the court came up exactly once in the debates, when Martha Raddatz asked Vice President Joe Biden and Rep. Paul Ryan about their views on abortion. Ryan said, ?We don?t think that unelected judges should make this decision??an answer as meaningless as it is bland, because the constitutionality of legalized abortion has been in the hands of the courts for almost 40 years. Biden called Ryan on it. ?The next president will get one or two Supreme Court nominees,? he said. ?That?s how close Roe v. Wade is.?

Yes, that?s true. The court is a bevy of septuagenarians, and while they are proving how hale and hearty they are today by keeping the court in session while the rest of Washington shuts down, the chances are that the next president will get to replace one or more of them. The age count: In March, Ruth Bader Ginsburg will turn 80 and Antonin Scalia will turn 77. Anthony Kennedy is 76. Stephen Breyer is 74. If Obama gets to replace Scalia or Kennedy, the balance of power on the court will tip, and the same is true if Romney gets to replace Ginsburg or Breyer.

In all likelihood, an Obama nominee would be a relative moderate. They don?t make liberal lion judges like they used to, and if they did, the president has shown little appetite for pushing hard to confirm them. A Romney nominee, on the other hand, would be a hard-core conservative. Make no mistake about this: The court is far too important to the Republican base for its activists to let this chance slip through their fingers?they are still having Never Again nightmares about George H.W. Bush?s selection of retired Justice David Souter. The Romney campaign?s website says, ?As president, Mitt will nominate judges in the mold of Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Scalia, Thomas, and Alito.? Kennedy doesn?t make the list. Never mind his votes producing a conservative majority in Bush v. Gore, Citizens United, upholding the federal ban on so-called ?partial-birth? abortion, and plenty of other cases. He is unloved by the right for his perfidy in reaffirming the core of Roe v. Wade 20 years ago, in a famous triumvirate opinion with Souter and retired Justice Sandra Day O?Connor.

Given how easy it is to see that the Supreme Court is in play (not to mention the federal appeals courts and district courts), why aren?t Romney and Obama talking about it? The obvious answer is that they?ve each concluded it?s not to their political advantage. For years, conservative have been better at motivating voters by talking about the Supreme Court. Trying to overturn Roe v. Wade is just more exciting than maintaining the status quo. So liberal and moderates have tended to be more content with the existing balance and less driven to treat the court as a priority for voting. At his 2010 State of the Union, Obama was willing to call the court out over the flood of campaign money unleashed by Citizens United and its progeny. But he got blowback for politicizing the court, and we haven?t heard any fighting words lately: For the president, stressing his future judicial picks must either turn off swing voters or leave them cold.

For Romney, the truck is to reassure his base that he means what he says about picking a justice in the unswervingly conservative mold without doing so loudly enough to scare the mushy middle. Along with this website statement about the current justices he sees as models, Romney signaled to his base with his selection of Robert Bork as a legal adviser. If you?re a member of the Federalist Society, that?s all the reassurance you need, since Bork still stands for a full-on assault on liberal-leaning constitutional interpretation. It?s also a perfect signal because no one other than Federalist Society types is paying attention to it. On abortion, Romney has been careful to distance himself from the extreme of eliminating the rape exception, which polls badly. And maybe that?s all he has to do, even though his party has embraced exactly this extreme in its own platform and at least a dozen of its own candidates for senate endorse this view.

Most memorably, of course, we?ve heard about outlawing the right to abortion for rape victims from Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin and Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock. And Obama does talk about women?s health care on the stump, including funding for Planned Parenthood. He just doesn?t connect the dots to the Supreme Court. For that, the best place to go is the ?You Don?t Own Me? video, released last week that revives Lesley Gore?s 1964 song.

If the ideological composition of the court shifts, abortion is the biggest flower in a bouquet of changes that would be ripe for the picking. There?s the future of campaign finance reform?whether to forge ahead with allowing more and more money into American politics, a la Citizens United. There?s the separation of church and state, gay marriage, and the scope of the death penalty and the rights of criminal defendants. But the court has deftly kept most of this off its docket so far this term. It?s entirely likely that the justices will hear a challenge to the Voting Rights Act before April is out, along with one to the Defense of Marriage Act. But putting off the decisions to hear these cases so far has helped to keep the court clear of the campaign?s line of fire. The same is true of the 5-4 ruling last June preserving Obamacare. That decision led to widespread speculation about the political instincts of Chief Justice John Roberts when he unexpectedly cast the fifth vote to uphold the health care law. If Roberts is indeed playing the long game, nothing will help him win more than a Romney-Ryan victory and the new allies on the bench it would bring him.

Eric Church storms CMAs by doing it his own way

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Eric Church expects to be angry when he walks out on the stage to perform during the Country Music Association Awards.

The rising country music star will cap a long journey as the top nominee Thursday night, but that doesn't change anything as far as he's concerned. He's always angry when he walks onstage.

"I have a huge chip on my shoulder," Church said. "I got that from how we got here, and I think it's a good thing. When I walk on the stage, I carry all the times that other artists got other things, we couldn't get a song played because of who we were versus the song's merits, or the times we had to play 12, 13 days and still were broke. All those things I carry on that stage. I think it makes me a better performer and I think it makes it better for the crowd. I'm not going to lose that, regardless of the nominations."

In 18 months, Church's relationship with the Music City machine that runs popular country music has turned upside-down. Long an outsider, he's been shunned for his hard-edge sound, lack of hits and even his choice of eyewear. There was a tip of the hat to his growing popularity last year when Church got to play part of his song "Drink in My Hand" during the CMAs. "Drink" went on to become Church's first No. 1 and a year later he's got a leading five nominations, including album and male vocalist of the year. He's also got a primo performance slot on a show that will likely draw 16 million viewers when it airs live at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.

Church acknowledges he did everything wrong on his journey to this point. That's what makes it all feel so right.

Almost every decision ran hard against conventional Music City wisdom, yet since the release of "Chief" in 2011, the 35-year-old has done no wrong. That album debuted atop the Billboard 200 all-genre album chart and went platinum, scoring heavy sales for his back catalog. He launched his first headlining arena tour. And the rise of "Springsteen" to the top of the charts further proved Church has overcome radio's resistance, the largest hurdle to a widespread country audience.

Country star Jason Aldean, a friend of Church's, believes that unwillingness to compromise is as responsible for his growing audience as his hit songs.

"He's never tried to conform to what Nashville or radio or anybody else thought he should be, and I think early on in his career it cost him a little bit," Aldean said. "He wasn't getting that radio success. But I think when he started releasing songs like 'Homeboy' and 'Springsteen' and some of that stuff, they're just great songs and really different. I think those kind of things let people know that's who Eric Church is and it really kind of set him apart from a lot of the other acts that are out there."

Church jokes about the decisions he's made and says a lot of it was simple survival. But the North Carolina singer-songwriter and his manager, John Peets, knew the key to success early on. It was just a matter of waiting for everyone else to come around to their point of view.

Peets said he heard it in early demos Church recorded while chasing a record deal.

"A light bulb went off," Peets said. "I'm from a dirt road in Ohio and I was just like every guy that I grew up with would be, drinking beer to this. ... It just resonated very instantly with me." From there, it was about honing "a fine point on a point of view."

That point of view was initially "off-center," Peets said, when it came to the way business was being done in Nashville. The mushy middle of country's demographic has long been women over 30. Since that crowd didn't seem interested, Church and Peets ignored it.

They hired rock 'n' roll producer Jay Joyce to make sure the music was as hard as possible, feeding on an '80s rock vibe that resonated in Church's youth. And he geared his live show to the people he saw staring back at him every night ? young, often angry, men with beer bottles in hand and fists in the air. Church did interviews with magazines decidedly uncool with country's core like Playboy, Penthouse and High Times, eschewing sure things like the morning talk-show circuit and heavy radio promotion. His crowd wasn't up early and they weren't listening to the radio.

"They weren't somebody that were a very sought-after demographic, except for us ? because, you know, I'm a guy," Church said. "And we make guy music. That's who we saw in these bars and these clubs, and they were seeking it out. And they were telling people about it and they were spreading the word. And then it changed in the format. All I hear now is people going, 'We want to improve our guy numbers. We want to improve our 25-to-34 male numbers,' and all these things. We built it on that demographic's back."

Church enjoys the focus the CMA's voters have put on him but plans no changes in his way of thinking.

"I feel like all we're doing is what we did back then; we're doing it on a bigger scale," Church said. "I think more people are paying attention now. It certainly makes me feel good that we stuck to our guns. If you ask me about being kind of in the middle of things, I like the edges. So for me it's about staying out there on those edges and being able to do something different every time. I think that's how we got here."

Dem group runs ads for Montana Libertarian candidate in what appears to be attempt to split the vote

A group controlled by Democrats is running ads in the Montana Senate race telling voters to vote for the Libertarian candidate, Dan Cox, in what appears to be an attempt to split the vote between him and the Republican candidate ? and help propel Democratic Sen. Jon Tester to re-election.

According to Open Secrets, Montana Hunters and Anglers has spent $1,089,694 this cycle attacking Republican Rep. Denny Rehberg, who is challenging incumbent Tester for his Senate seat.

The latest ad attacks Rehberg and goes on to tell viewers, ?Vote Cox: the real conservative.?

But the leadership of Montana Hunters and Anglers, according to its website, is not made up of the conservatives or libertarians that one would expect from a group running that type of message. Rather, it is made up of Democratic donors, one Democratic state senator, and several donors to Tester.

Cox, the libertarian candidate, would likely take votes from the GOP and is seen as a possible spoiler in the race, pulling enough votes away from Rehberg to hand Tester a narrow victory in the tight race.

The group?s president is Land Tawney, a member of Montana Sportsmen for Obama who also serves on Tester?s Montana Sportsmen?s Advisory Panel. On July 28, 2011, he made a $500 donation to Tester.

Kendall Van Dyk, the group?s secretary, is currently a Democratic state senator in Montana. He is also a member of Montana Sportsmen for Obama, and on April 13, 2011, according to Federal Election Committee filings, he gave $200 to the Montana Democratic Party, though he has not donated money to Democrats in 2012.

Barrett Kaiser, who is listed as the treasurer of the group, is the former chief of staff to Sen. Max Baucus, Montana?s senior senator and a Democrat. He made three separate donations to Montanans for Tester in 2011, totaling $2,350. He made two separate donations to the Montana Democratic Party in 2012, totaling $1,500. He has made several donations to both Tester and Baucus? campaigns over the past several years.

George Cooper, the director of Montana Hunters and Anglers, is senior vice president at Forbes-Tate, a consulting firm. He made two donations to Tester in 2012, totaling $1,250. In May, he donated $1,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. In 2012 alone, he has also donated to Democratic Sen. Kristin Gillibrand; Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson; New Mexico Democratic Rep. Martin Heinrich, who is running for Senate; former Maine Gov. Angus King in Maine ?? an independent candidate who is expected to caucus with Democrats; and Christie Vilsack, wife of Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, who is running as a Democrat to unseat Rep. Steve King of Iowa.

?This really shows how far Washington Democrats will go to try to keep Harry Reid in power as majority leader,? said Erik Iverson, campaign manager for Rehberg. ?You now have liberal groups advertising on behalf of a libertarian candidate in Montana. They know they?ve run out of people willing to vote for Jon Tester, and now they?re trying to actively support a spoiler in this race.?

?This shows what Harry Reid can do when he wants to save one of his loyal foot soldiers, and that?s what Jon Tester is, he?s been a loyal foots oldier in the Obama-Reid army in Washington, D.C.,? Iverson added.

?It?s insulting to conservatives in Montana that these out-of-touch East Coast liberals think that they can come in here and try to fool voters in Montana ? try to fool conservatives ? into re-electing a liberal Reid-Pelosi-Obama-style Democrat.?

The Tester campaign and the Cox campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Requests for comment from Cooper, Van Dyk, Kaiser and Tawney were also not immediately returned.

Soda consumption, screen time, team sports at school influence students' weight

Soda consumption, TV and video/computer games, and the frequency of meals heavily influenced students' weight in an Indiana University study that examined the impact of a school-based obesity intervention program over an 18-month period.

More soda consumption and screen time meant students were more likely to be overweight or to gain weight. The more frequently students ate meals each day, the less likely they were to stay overweight or gain weight during the study, which examined the Healthy, Energetic, Ready, Outstanding, Enthusiastic Schools program.

Dong-Chul Seo, associate professor in the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington, said participation in team sports also contributed to students' ability to achieve a healthy weight.

"Schools and families may be able to successfully focus on these modifiable risk factors, decreasing the burden of childhood obesity," he said.

HEROES, implemented by schools in southern Indiana, northwestern Kentucky and southeastern Illinois, is sponsored by the Welborn Baptist Foundation and based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Coordinated School Health Model. HEROES is intended to enhance schoolwide wellness culture through changes in physical education, nutrition, the physical environment, health promotion efforts for school staff and family, and community involvement. Researchers from IU's School of Public Health-Bloomington and the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community have been evaluating the HEROES initiative for the past four years.

"Predictors for Persistent Overweight, Deteriorated Weight and Improved Weight Status During 18 Months in a School-Based Longitudinal Cohort" involved 5,309 students at 11 schools.

Seo said the findings confirm the connection between higher levels of soda consumption and persistent overweight and deteriorating weight status, and they support the recent and controversial New York City ban on sales of supersized soda and other sweetened beverages.

The finding about the relationship between the number of meals students eat daily and their weight contributes to a scant amount of evidence in this area.

"Thus, encouraging students to maintain a regular meal pattern with at least three meals a day appears to be a good strategy to help students achieve healthy weight," Seo said.

The research found that the overall socio-economic status of a school had an impact on students. Those attending schools with lower socio-economic status were more likely to be overweight or to gain weight during the study period. This could reflect the greater opportunities students have for nutritious food offerings and physical activity at schools with high socio-economic status, Seo said, or it could reflect peer influence.

Seo will discuss this study with Mindy King at 6:15 p.m. EDT Tuesday, Oct. 30. Co-authors are King and Danielle Neukam, with the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at IU; Nayoung Kim, IU School of Public Health-Bloomington; and Rhonda Meade, Welborn Baptist Foundation.
