Domaining Like a Pro: 5 Tips for the Effective Use of Domains for - ROI

I regularly buy domain names. In fact, for the last several years, I have been purchasing an average of two per week. Family and friends have branded me as an ?addictive domainer,? but a great deal of my success online has come from buying and selling high quality domain names. Domains, like raw land, represent the undeveloped real estate of the web. And, like real estate, they can be developed into cash positive investments you can squat, flip and sell. If you?re like me though, you?re in it for the long hall. I rarely sell unless the price and timing are right.

My acquisition streak has led me to multiple raw, brandable and exact match domain names, some with existing links and traffic for pennies on the dollar. With this buy low, sell high strategy (and a few other basic pointers), you too can increase your monthly cash influx. With that in mind, here are some specific pointers on how to domain like a pro.

Dropped Domains are a Man?s Best Friend

I rarely purchase unregistered domain names. Sometimes (on a rare occasion) you can stumble across a domain that has never been registered which also could bring in higher organic traffic, but unfortunately the land-grab for the .com, .org and .net TLDs is over. Unless you were a domain ?sooner? in the mid-1990s, you missed the ground floor.

Luckily dropped domain lists and secondary domain name auctions allow the even late-comers to participate. For the would-be internet entrepreneur, the secondary market allows for the acquisition of domains with inherent value. Although you generally won?t find great domains for a paltry $10, you?ll be surprised at what you can snag for <$100 USD.

Exact Match for Exactly the Right Reasons

Search algorithms have certainly steered away from exact match domains in recent vintage, but that doesn?t mean it?s been eliminated from the algorithm altogether. There is still a great amount of value in buying and building out exact match domains. Whatever niche you may be targeting, see if you can acquire exact domain names with large search volumes. Proper linking techniques still ranks such sites more rapidly than their branded counter parts. It?s a cheap way of doing organic optimization.

With exact match in mind, having a branded domain name with the exact domains redirected to your specific landing pages on your brand?s site can be beneficial as well. But, if you are able to acquire an exact .com TLD without any dashes or numbers, my personal advice is to keep it as the live site, especially if search volume is north of 100K per month.

Redirects are Dynamite

At any given moment, I?m working on about 20 different websites. That doesn?t mean I only own 20 domain names. Quite to the contrary, hundreds of my domain names act as redirects to keyword-specific landing pages which I?m using to rank, bring in traffic and convert to paying customers or leads for which I can sell to third parties for a profit.

The simple name of the game is you can use exact match domain redirects to landing pages to help said pages rank for the long tail terms others are paying big bucks to rank for. It?s a simple strategy I?ve used for years. It still works and I expect it?s not going away anytime soon. Redirects are a domainers second best friend.

Focus on Monetization

There are thousands of domains dropping daily, many of which can be tempting to acquire. Remember, selectivity and prudence are your best allies when acquiring old domains. Because aged domains tend to be a bit more expensive, you can?t just sell the farm and acquire them in bulk. Here are my domain purchase filtering rules.

  1. Don?t buy it unless it?s gross monthly search volume is north of 20,000
  2. Avoid any exact match name for which people are not paying Adwords to rank for
  3. Don?t buy too many domains you think you can brand for some service. In my experience, you?ll always have more ideas than you have time and money to chase

In short, ensure you can obtain a healthy return on investment for your purchase. Don?t buy domains reckless abandon. Have a plan and work the plan, otherwise your business blog and web monetization will dip into the red before you?ve even begun.

Existing Links are a Plus

Buying old valuable domains at bargain prices is ideal. If said domains have existing links, even better. If, while checking some of the numerous dropped domain lists, you find a domain which meets your niche requirements and includes aged, indexed and quality links, consider yourself in the money.

Existing links means you are able to much more rapidly advance your search engine ranking. Instead of waiting weeks for your site to be indexed and then weeks more for ranking to appear (after having it disappear and then reappear several times), existing links can send you to the coveted page one with turbo speed.

When it comes to your business website or corporate blog, content combined with great SEO is king. Your domain name is somewhere in the royalty count (perhaps prince or duchess). Don?t forget or discount the importance of a good main or redirected domain in your search strategy. It?s only one arrow in the quiver, but believe me, it?s a big arrow.
