Is WordPress a Good Choice as an eCommerce Solution? | Shero ...

The first step you?ll ever take into the world of
e-commerce is to think first about what solution is best for your needs. The fact that you are considering taking your business online is wonderful, because
e-commerce is great; the overhead compared to brick-and-mortar stores is considerably lower, and in 2011, nearly $200 billion in e-commerce sales occurred in the United States alone ? and it?s a number that?s going to keep increasing!

Now, let?s assume you already have a WordPress blog. That?s fine, because there are WordPress plug-ins and themes built for the sole purpose of using your WordPress site to sell products online! You grab a plug-in, stock it with your existing products and prepare to dive in?

But before you do take the plunge, you should, above all, consider just how big you want the e-commerce section of your site to be. Do you just want to sell some two or three varieties of t-shirts that advertise your blog (or your site), or do you want to have a fully-fledged, heavy-duty online store?

If you opt for the former option, then go right ahead. The advantage of using WordPress e-commerce plugins is that they are lightweight and relatively easy to manage. Once installed and activated, you can immediately get to working on, quite literally, setting up an eCommerce store. But if you want a truly substantial e-commerce site that is the focus of your web presence, you might want to consider NOT using a WordPress plugin, and instead using software that is focused entirely on e-commerce, such as Magento. That same lightweight nature of WordPress plugins makes them impractical and too simplistic (without some serious code modification) for your needs.

This is because, even though WordPress is an extremely powerful content management system, it is a blogging/information publishing tool at its heart. WordPress was designed with blogs in mind, and continues to be so. Trying to make WordPress do something it wasn?t designed to do well will give you nothing but headaches.

Pretty much all WordPress commerce plugins suffer from at least one or two of the following problems:

1. Limited options. Again, it?s due to the lightweight nature of WordPress plugins. Suppose you want to use different shipping options, since you sell different kinds of product. Or maybe you want to accept multiple payment methods. Unfortunately, some WordPress plugins simply don?t allow for this as is. For example, eShop lets you only use PayPal, Payson, or their own payment service (which takes a small cut of every purchase). This means you can?t print an invoice, one of the most important parts of doing business nowadays!

2. Too much coding to fix. WordPress uses the PHP programming language as its core. Thus, if you really want to use WordPress to its fullest, you need to be very good at coding in PHP. But you aren?t a programmer! You?ve got a business to run! E-commerce software, being developed with that very purpose in mind, is going to make running your web business as easy as blogging is WordPress, all with minimal, if any, coding and hacking.

3. They can be expensive. Some WordPress e-commerce plugins are going to deal a potentially unwelcome hit to your bottom line if you want anything beyond the basics. For example, Cart66, one such plugin, can cost anywhere from $90 to $400! Even if the software is free, you may have to spend money for extensions! WooCommerce, a free e-commerce plugin, has numerous extensions that can cost $30 or more just for one feature! Now, if these plugins didn?t suffer from other issues, the cost would be more than justified. This can also be trouble for those of you who just want to sell stuff to promote your blog/site?why fork out a ton of money for fluff when you can use get solid e-commerce software with comparable features for much less, and even for no money at all?

4. Poor official support, especially if you don?t pay for the premium version. Granted, the Internet is full of places you can go to get free advice on how to deal with problems, but getting support from the people who created the plugins can sometimes be problematic, if not completely impossible; and even when you do, it can take a while for them to get to you. While the competence of the support team may vary from software to software, e-commerce software is generally going to be more inclined to dealing with the problems you might experience.

So, think hard about your needs. Can you get by with the basics, or do you need a substantial store to do what?s needed? Only when you determine that can you know whether you can make do with a WordPress plugin or an e-commerce program.
