Egypt unrest casts shadow over polls (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egyptian protesters demanding an end to army rule clashed with police firing tear gas in central Cairo on Saturday in a flare-up that cast another shadow over a parliamentary election billed as the nation's first free vote in decades.

Two days of voting begin on Monday in the first stage of a complex, drawn-out election that will be completed in January.

One protester, Ahmed Sayed, 21, died after being hit by a riot police vehicle in the clashes. His death was the first since a truce between police and protesters on Thursday calmed violence that had killed 41 people around Cairo's Tahrir Square and elsewhere.

Alarmed by the violence, the United States and the European Union have urged a swift handover to civilian rule in a country where prolonged political turmoil has compounded economic woes.

The latest clash occurred near the cabinet office on the second day of a sit-in to protest against the army's appointment of 78-year-old Kamal Ganzouri, a premier under ousted President Hosni Mubarak, to form a "national salvation government."

An army source said the ruling military council held separate talks with presidential candidates Mohamed ElBaradei and Amr Moussa. "I met Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi over the current crisis and discussed ways to resolve it," Moussa told Reuters later, but gave no details.

ElBaradei's office said in a statement that he had been in touch with all relevant parties to "activate the demands of the revolution." It said he had met Tantawi and army chief of staff Sami Enan to discuss these demands, without reaching agreement.

Protest groups have named ElBaradei as their choice to head a civilian body to supervise Egypt's transition to democracy instead of the army council that took over from Mubarak.

Ganzouri met with youth activists, but the April 6 movement, prominent in the anti-Mubarak revolt, disavowed those involved, saying they were "planted by the military council."

Ganzouri told reporters he had not yet offered anyone a ministerial portfolio. "I am ready to sit with all political currents. The new government will have new faces and youth will be part of it as they are the backbone of this nation," he said.

Tahrir Square protesters have dismissed Ganzouri, premier from 1996 to 1999, as another face from the past whose appointment reflects the generals' resistance to change.

A television clip circulated on Facebook in the past 24 hours shows him sitting one seat away from Tantawi on January 25, the first day of Egypt's revolt, as they listen to a speech by former Interior Minister Habib al-Adli, who is on trial with Mubarak on charges of ordering protesters to be killed.

"Down, down with the marshal," a group chanted in Tahrir, near tents set up on grassy patches. They were referring to Tantawi, who was Mubarak's defense minister for 20 years.

ACCIDENTAL KILLING

The Interior Ministry said the protester had been killed by accident, an account backed by Ahmad Zeidan, 18, an activist at the sit-in who said he had seen the youth being run over.

"It wasn't deliberate. They (police) were retreating quickly because (protesters) were throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at them," he said. The demonstrators had come from Tahrir to confront police vehicles apparently heading for the square.

The turmoil of the past week has overshadowed the election, whose initial stage involves Cairo, Alexandria and other areas.

One declared reason for the polling marathon is because judges, who retain public respect for their independence, will supervise the election and there are not enough of them available for a single day of nationwide voting.

Reflecting security concerns, Ahmed al-Zind, head of Egypt's Judges Club, told a news conference the organization had taken out private insurance to cover all the judges involved.

Protesters in Tahrir seemed in two minds about the election.

Emad Mohamed, 35, wearing a hat in Egyptian national colors, had no faith in the vote, saying it would enable Mubarak-era politicians to make a come-back. "We do not think it is in our interest. Where are the new parties?" he asked.

But Yasser Nasr, assisting at a makeshift clinic, said: "They cannot delay elections. It will mess up the situation. Once they happen, hopefully things will improve."

The Muslim Brotherhood and other mainstream parties which have not joined the protesters in Tahrir want the election to go ahead, eager to establish a strong presence in parliament.

They have accepted the army's transition timetable, but the demonstrators are demanding an immediate end to military rule.

Instead, the generals have promised that a new president will be elected by mid-2012, sooner than previously announced.

While tens of thousands packed Tahrir Square for what activists dubbed "Last Chance Friday," at least 5,000 people demonstrated in support of the army in another Cairo square, highlighting splits between youngsters bent on radical reform and people upset by the unrest who want to restore normality.

Ganzouri described his task as thankless and "extremely difficult," saying his priority was to secure the streets and revive the economy. Egypt's pound has hit a seven-year low and foreign reserves have dropped by a third since December 2010.

Protest groups have called for another mass rally on Sunday to press demands for an immediate transfer of power.

New Zealand set for asset sales after crushing election win (Reuters)

WELLINGTON (Reuters) ? New Zealand's re-elected center-right government claimed a mandate on Sunday to push on with up to $5 billion worth of asset sales and welfare reforms and said it would quickly get down to forming a new administration.

The National Party, led by former foreign exchange dealer John Key, scored 48 percent of the vote, increased its number of seats to 60 from 58 and gained the support of two small parties to guarantee a majority in the 121-seat parliament.

"It's a pretty strong endorsement of where the Government sits, and we're confident we'll be able to build the relationships needed to go ahead with the programme," National's campaign manager Steven Joyce told TVNZ.

National campaigned on promises to consolidate policies of the past three years and work toward economic growth by cutting debt, curbing spending, selling state assets and returning to a budget surplus by 2014/15.

Ray Miller of Auckland University said National had effectively neutralised its biggest weakness -- the unpopular asset sales, slated to raise NZ$5 billion to NZ$7 billion.

"They got the policy out early, they sold it in positive terms and in the end, while it was still a negative, it was one policy among many and not an overriding one," he said.

National plans to sell minority stakes in state-owned power energy companies and further reduce the stake in Air New Zealand. Key has promised local small investors will have preference in share sales, with a 10 percent cap likely on how much any single investor can hold.

WELFARE REFORM, SLOW CARBON TRADE

It also plans to reform welfare by getting people off benefits and back to work, and will slow down the expansion of its carbon trading system to lessen the cost on businesses and households.

Key's strong personal rating, his easy going, affable, unifying style was also a factor behind National's showing, despite continuing worries over the economy.

"I've got a PHD in geology and I still can't get a full-time job," said Sami Alshidi, 52, who has been working as a taxi driver and voted National because he felt it would steer the economy better.

Financial markets had already priced in no change of government and a broad continuation of policies.

"The National Party has a clear mandate to proceed with asset sales to lower fiscal deficits and government debt," said TD Securities head of research Annette Beacher.

"But this election was not on the global radar screens...(and) will likely be completely ignored."

The final tally of seats could yet change when tens of thousands of absentee votes are counted over the next two weeks, although the initial turnout of nearly 74 percent was one of the lowest in more than a century, election officials said.

The main opposition center-left Labour Party slumped to 27 percent, the lowest share of the vote in its 95-year history, and lost nine seats. The environmentalist Greens upped their share to more than 10 percent and gained four seats.

The re-emergence of the nationalist New Zealand First Party, led by the maverick veteran Winston Peters, from three years in the political wilderness, is expected to add fireworks but not impede National.

"We will make sure of a huge amount of sunlight on New Zealand politics," Peters said.

American Samoa on a roll with 2-game unbeaten run

updated 9:04 a.m. ET Nov. 25, 2011

APIA, Samoa - Two days after winning for the first time in its history, American Samoa's national soccer team stretched its unbeaten run to two games.

After Tuesday's 2-1 win over Tonga, the team earned a 1-1 draw with the Cook Islands on Thursday. Another win against rival Samoa on Saturday will put the U.S. protectorate into the second round of World Cup qualifying in the Oceania region.

American Samoa coach Thomas Rongen, a former Ajax player and veteran MLS coach, says "we made it very hard for ourselves again but we got the result we needed to make the game against Samoa, who I consider the best team here, a meaningful contest."

(AP) ? Three American students arrested during a protest in Egypt were released Friday and planned to catch flights out of Cairo to begin their trips home, an attorney and family said.

An Egyptian court had ordered the release of American University in Cairo students Derrik Sweeney, Luke Gates and Gregory Porter a day earlier.

The three were arrested on the roof of a university building near Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square on Sunday. Officials accused them of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters.

Attorney Theodore Simon, who represents the 19-year-old Porter, a student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, said police escorted the students to the airport late Friday local time.

Simon said he and Porter's mother both spoke by phone with the student, who is from the Philadelphia suburb of Glenside, Pa.

"He clearly conveyed to me ... that he was OK," Simon told the AP.

Simon wouldn't immediately discuss his client's travel plans, but Sweeney's mother says the students were expected to fly from Cairo to Frankfurt, Germany.

Joy Sweeney told the AP her son, a 19-year-old Georgetown University student from Jefferson City, Mo., would fly from Frankfurt to Washington then on to St. Louis. She said family will meet him when he arrives late Saturday.

"I am ecstatic," Sweeney said Friday. "I can't wait for him to get home tomorrow night. I can't believe he's actually going to get on a plane. It is so wonderful."

The 21-year-old Gates is a student at Indiana University.

Messages seeking comment after word of the students' release for Gates' parents Friday. They had issued a statement through the school Thursday saying they were "extremely happy" he would be coming home soon.

Joy Sweeney said U.S. Embassy officials had earlier indicated it might be a few more days before the students were released because Egyptian courts typically are closed Fridays and Saturdays.

"But apparently the U.S. Embassy and the powers that be made it happen," she said. "Whoever needed to be there got there and got it done for the boys, and we are eternally grateful."

Sweeney said she had talked with her son Friday afternoon and "he seemed jubilant."

"He thought he was going to be able to go back to his dorm room and get his stuff," she said. "We said, 'No, no, don't get your stuff, we just want you here.'"

She said American University will ship his belongings home.

Sweeney had earlier said she did not prepare a Thanksgiving celebration this week because the idea seemed "absolutely irrelevant" while her son still was being held.

"I'm getting ready to head out and buy turkey and stuffing and all the good fixings so that we can make a good Thanksgiving dinner," she said Friday.

Buying clothes online? New technology may help (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Asaf Moses is in the midst of displaying a new way to measure body dimensions.

A virtual instructor prompts him to turn 90 degrees to the left and adopt various poses such as "The Penguin," aimed at capturing over 20 different measurements using a device that many people have embedded in their laptops -- a simple webcam.

"It's capturing everything that's needed to tailor a shirt to your measurements", said Moses. And it's all online.

Shoppers generally flock to malls during the holidays beginning on Black Friday, although in recent years many have headed to the Internet. A recent survey by analytics firm comScore predicted online shopping would increase 15 percent this current holiday season.

Yet buying apparel from a website can cause problems finding the right size, look and fit for your body type and personal tastes. As a result, several technology companies have created new ways for people to size themselves up at home.

Moses, the co-founder of one such technology company from Germany, UPcload, said his system takes just three minutes and generates measurements as accurate as a tailor.

Once measured, shoppers will be able to access their measurements at supporting retailers' websites so they can see, for example, if a size small-sized t-shirt will fit around their chest or be long enough to drape down their torso.

Fits.me is taking the task of finding the perfect fit a step further by using robotic mannequins with dimensions similar to a shopper's in a sort of virtual fitting room.

"Robots are a fantastic tool to see how garments look on differently sized human bodies", said Heikki Haldre, co-founder and CEO of the Estonia-based company.

Each garment is photographed 2000 times, accounting for the permutations of body measurements that the robots morph into.

"When the customer goes online to see the garment on their body measurements, they are seeing one of those pre-recorded images," said Haldre.

Fits.me's virtual fitting rooms are currently being used by retailers such as Thomas Pink and Ermenegildo Zegna.

Haldre said that users of the technology are almost 10 times more likely to make a purchase.

PERSONALIZING ONLINE SHOPPING

That boost is significant. Forrester Research forecasts that only 10.9 percent of apparel and accessories transactions will be conducted online by the end of 2011, far less than the 25 percent for books and 17 percent for consumer electronics.

"Books and electronics are the most penetrated categories because they're easy to purchase online -- you don't need to touch or feel them," said Sucharita Mulpuru, vice president and principal analyst of eBusiness for Forrester Research.

Mulpuru said the apparel shoppers' online hesitancy is complex, extending beyond finding the perfect fit.

"It's not just a science. A lot of it is personal preference," which is difficult for technology to address.

Moses of UPcload said accounting for people's varying tastes is something the company considered during development.

"When we started, we had this intention to tell you your size ... (but) people's preferences play an enormous role. Some people want their clothing tight, and some want it loose," he explained. Now UPcload just provides details on the fit.

Haldre of Fits.me agrees. "The fitting room looks at size from the perspective that 'it's a matter of a style', he said.

"It's surprising how many people choose a size that is not recommended by the size chart. Almost half would go for a size smaller, or even a couple sizes larger."

Looking ahead, Haldre envisions an online shopping world where people will "see how clothing will look on them -- with their face and other apparel they might be wearing."

For instance, another company, Zugara, lets customers overlay garments on themselves using a webcam.

Haldre predicted the convergence of various technologies would create a big shift in shopping, eventually leading to online making up 30 percent of apparel purchases.

But Mulpuru was more skeptical.

"I don't know that we'll ever get to 30 percent, because ultimately it's a very personal decision," she said.

"So much of what happens in a store is not just about fit. It's also about someone saying 'that looks great on you' and getting social validation for a product -- and that's something that an algorithm definitely can't account for."

Clean air, water rules spark different responses (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Companies complaining about tighter air and water pollution standards may be saying one thing to lawmakers and another to regulators and investors.

The Associated Press compared companies' congressional testimony to company reports submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The reports consistently said the impact of environmental proposals is unknown or would not cause serious financial harm.

That's different from testimony to Republican-led congressional committees. Companies large and small made dire predictions of plant closings and layoffs if the Obama administration succeeds with plans to further curb air and water pollution.

The disparity in the messages shows that in a political environment, business has no misgivings about describing potential economic horror stories to lawmakers. Republicans plan to make what they say is regulatory overreach a 2012 campaign issue.

Erik Walden Arrested: Packers Linebacker Jailed For Domestic Battery

Several hours after the Packers finished off their Thanksgiving win over the Detroit Lions, Green Bay linebacker Erik Walden is alleged to have assaulted his girlfriend at their shared residence in a town south of Green Bay.

According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Walden's girlfriend called the police at 6:10 a.m. on Friday morning to report events that had occurred at 2:30 a.m. The woman had reportedly been treated at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay before notifying authorities.

Walden was arrested shortly thereafter.

With the courts in Brown County Jail being closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, Walden will be staying in jail until at least Monday.

According to NBC26 in Green Bay, Walden's girlfriend later claimed the incident is a misunderstanding. The version of events she relayed to NBC26 is that she tripped and fell during an argument.

On Friday, the Packers issued a statement:

"The Packers organization is aware of the situation involving Erik Walden. We are in the process of gathering more information and will refrain from making any further comment."

Walden is currently in his fourth NFL season out of Middle Tennessee State. The 26-year-old has participated in all 11 Green Bay games this year, recording 41 tackles and three sacks. Walden joined the Packers during the 2010 season and earned NFC Defensive Player Of The Week honors during Green Bay's Week 17 win over Chicago.

Thanksgiving travel rush is under way across US (AP)

CHICAGO ? Undeterred by costlier gas and airfare, millions of Americans set out Wednesday to see friends and family in what is expected to be the nation's busiest Thanksgiving weekend since the financial meltdown more than three years ago.

The rough economy led people to find ways to save money, but many refused to scrap their travel plans.

"We wouldn't think of missing it," said Bill Curtis, a retiree from Los Angeles who was with his wife at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, Calif. "Family is important and we love the holiday. So we cut corners other places so we can afford to travel."

About 42.5 million people are expected to hit the road or take to the skies for Thanksgiving this year, according to travel tracker AAA. That's the highest number of travelers since the start of the recession at the end of 2007.

Heavy rain slowed down early travelers along the East Coast. Snow across parts of New England and upstate New York made for treacherous driving and thousands of power outages. And a mudslide covered train tracks in the Pacific Northwest. But most of the country is expected to have clear weather Thursday.

For many travelers, it was a smooth, if more expensive, trip.

The average round-trip airfare for the top 40 U.S. routes is $212, up 20 percent from last year. Tickets on most Amtrak one-way routes have climbed slightly, and drivers are paying an average $3.33 a gallon, or 16 percent more than last year, according to AAA.

Jake Pagel, a waiter from Denver, was flying to see his girlfriend's family in San Jose, Calif. Pagel said had to give up working during one of the restaurant industry's busiest and most profitable times.

"I think it's something you can't quantify in terms of monetary cost," he said. "I mean, being able to spend quality time with your family is fairly significant."

Most travelers ? about 90 percent, according to AAA ? were expected to hit the road.

John Mahoney acknowledged the economy has changed the way he travels, which is why he and his girlfriend slept in their car instead of getting a motel room when a heavy, wet snowstorm flared up along the New York State Thruway during their 20-hour drive from New Hampshire to St. Louis.

"Americans will still do what Americans do. We travel the roads," he said.

Some drivers who tried to get an early start along the Pennsylvania Turnpike found themselves stopped by ? or stuck in ? a gooey, tar-like mess after a tanker truck leaked driveway sealant along nearly 40 miles of highway. At least 150 vehicles were disabled Tuesday night.

Shun Tucker of suburban Chicago decided to spend the holiday with family in Memphis, Tenn., and booked a $49 bus ticket for a nine-hour trip south. "Yeah, I could go to the airport, but it's going to cost me $300," she said.

Lucretia Verner and her cousin set out on a drive from Tulsa, Okla., to Atlanta. They said they wouldn't stop to eat on the way, making do with the water, juice, lunch meat and bread they took with them.

Colette Parr of Las Vegas took flights with connections and switched airlines to save almost $200 on her trip to Newark, N.J.

Investment manager Matt Rightmire and his family typically fly on Thanksgiving. This year, they are making the holiday pilgrimage by car from New Hampshire to his in-laws in Youngstown, Ohio. He figured he is saving $1,000.

"It's family," he said. "That's what the holidays are about: Spending time with family. I don't really think it's optional. You may try to find the least expensive way to get there, but you've got to see your family."

THG Presents: The 10 Biggest Turkeys of 2011!

Happy Thanksgiving to all from The Hollywood Gossip!

What would this holiday be without family, food, football and reflection upon the things we appreciate most ... in the case of THG, that means some of the turkeys we have had the privilege, the honor and the burden of covering in the past year.

We are talking some fowl individuals here ... real bird brains.

Without further ado, THG's Top 10 Turkeys of 2011 ...

Spencer Pratt: A Big Turkey

Who will win the 5th Annual Spencer Pratt Thanksgiving Turkey Award!?

10. President Obama and GOP presidential candidates (tie). On a day when we share the blessings this nation has provided us, we'll also share the blame for a polarized electorate and a federal government destined for perennial gridlock.

9. Taylor Armstrong. Refining shamelessness, one episode at a time.

8. Gloria Allred. Loudmouth lawyer for accusers in seemingly every random celebrity scandal always wants to talk turkey ... and gobble up publicity.

7. Dr. Conrad Murray: He killed Michael Jackson, people. Michael Jackson.

6. Snooki. Effing Snooki. If you know who she is, we don't need to explain.

5. NBA Players. The only segment of the 1% that elects not to work. Idiots.

4. Kris Jenner. Call her an entertainment mogul. Call her a mom-ager. Call her a she-pimp for her own evil spawn. By any name, she's an embarrassment.

3. Charlie Sheen. Always one to ruffle feathers, the Two and a Half Men star went off the rails, lost his job, then lost his freaking mind! Through it all, he raked in the cash money, riding the gravy train and lughing all the way to the bank. God Bless America.

2. Lindsay Lohan. Year after year, this girl gets into legal jams like it's her job. What is her job, come to think of it? We forgot. All we know is that anyone else with a rap sheet that lengthy would be getting a good stuffing today ... IN JAIL!!

1. Ashton Kutcher. Sheen's replacement proved to be half a man at best, cheating on Demi Moore with assorted skanks, blaming gossip blogs, Tweeting a defense of Joe Paterno and personifying the term douche, which is like a 2011 version of turkey.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at THG!!!!

Stocks fall on weak economic news in China, Europe (AP)

Stocks are falling at midday on worries about slower global growth and the spreading European debt crisis.

An auction of German debt drew surprisingly weak interest Wednesday, sending global markets lower. Germany has Europe's biggest economy. The weak auction signaled that Europe's debt woes might be spreading to the stronger nations that are helping to keep the euro afloat.

A Chinese survey suggested that manufacturing activity there has slowed. Investors focused on the negative aspects of several mixed U.S. economic reports. The government said Tuesday that growth in the third quarter was far slower than previously reported.

The Dow is down 189 points, or 1.6 percent, at 11,305. The S&P 500 is down 22, or 1.8 percent, at 1,167. The Nasdaq is down 50, or 2 percent, at 2,471.

AUTOMOTIVE - VINTAGE: Maserati's Refined Mid-Engine GT

One of the first projects started after Citro?n acquired Maserati in 1968 was the development of a mid-engine sports car. While the company had been one of Italy's first manufacturers to produce a mid-engine race car back in 1961, Maserati had to leave road-car honors to the likes of Lamborghini and DeTomaso with such cars as the Miura and Mangusta, respectively.

Styling was key for any Italian sports car at the time, and to an extent still is, so Maserati called in the help of one of the best in the business for the design of the new car: Giorgietto Giugiaro. Having recently set up shop for himself under the Italdesign banner, Giugiaro had previously worked for Maserati as head of design for Ghia with the Ghibli as his finest work.

The Giugiaro-designed Bora was unveiled at the 1971 Gevena Motor Show. (Photo: Wouter Melissen) Maserati asked Giugiaro to combine the mid-engine layout with the creature comforts and luggage space of a conventional Grand Tourer.

Nearly two years in the making, the new Maserati Bora was finally launched at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. Giugiaro's design combined the some classic Maserati elements with the lines of the Alfa Romeo based Iguana show car first shown at the 1969 Turin Motor Show. The subtle wedge shape was dominated by a brushed stainless-steel roof and a sizeable engine cover that included a substantial amount of glass. Pop-up headlights were fitted, which gave the Bora a very clean look.

Under the skin, the Bora sported a central monocoque chassis with subframes front and rear to support the suspension and drivetrain. Like the rest of the car, the suspension was thoroughly modern with double wishbones and coil springs all-round.

Parent company Citro?n provided its superb high-pressure hydraulic power brake system. The first cars were fitted with solid discs, which were later replaced by internally ventilated examples. In similar vein the early recirculating-ball steering was substituted by rack-and-pinion.

Bora was powered by a 4.7-liter aluminum V8 that produced 210 horsepower and propelled the aerodynamic car to 74 mph. (Photo: Wouter Melissen) The Bora's mid-mounted engine was Maserati's familiar twin-cam V8, which had originally been developed for the company's great sports racers of the 1950s. In the Bora specification, the all-aluminum engine displaced just over 4.7 liters and featured single-spark ignition. Breathing through four Weber carburetors, it produced around 310 horsepower, transferred to the rear wheels by a five-speed manual gearbox. The very potent engine and slippery body enabled the Bora to achieve speeds of up to 174 mph.

Although introduced early in 1971, Bora production did not start in earnest until the end of the year. Compared with its rivals, the new Maserati was remarkably comfortable and quiet, and at the same time had very competitive performance figures and characteristics.

As the first cars rolled off the line, development continued and in addition to the earlier changes, a slightly larger version of the V8 was added as an option in 1975. At 4.9 liters, it produced both a little more horsepower and torque, and most importantly, it was already homologated in the United States.

At the end of 1972, Maserati's French importer Thepenier requested a competition version to race in the Tour de France and at Le Mans. Two cars, fitted with a dry-sump, high compression version of the 4.9-liter V8, were prepared by the relatively small staff in Modena. Built to Group 4 regulations, the car was immediately competitive, but its career was cut short due to homologation problems as well as financial issues.

When properly sorted, the Bora could have formed a real threat for the Ferrari Daytonas and Porsche 911s.

Civil rights groups oppose expanded interrogation (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Civil rights groups on Tuesday implored lawmakers to oppose Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte's effort to expand forms of interrogation of suspected terrorists detained by the United States, arguing that her legislation threatens to condone torture and other inhumane treatment.

Invoking the infamous Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, more than 30 organizations said Ayotte's amendment to a defense bill would "dangerously roll back" restrictions on interrogation techniques that Congress overwhelmingly approved in 2005 by allowing interrogators to use new methods beyond those allowed in the Army Field Manual.

The groups, led by the American Civil Liberties Union, stressed that coercive techniques such as waterboarding damaged the U.S. image worldwide and undercut relationships with allies.

The amendment "threatens to reopen the door to cruel interrogation techniques that senior military officers and interrogation experts agree are unnecessary and counterproductive," the groups wrote.

In a statement Tuesday, Ayotte countered that the measure "specifically prohibits torture, requiring compliance with the United Nations Convention Against Torture. ... Under my amendment, our high-value detainee interrogation group would be able to gather intelligence from the worst terrorists in a manner that's consistent with American laws and values."

The amendment by the freshman New Hampshire senator would authorize new interrogation methods to collect intelligence beyond those established in the Army Field Manual, which specifically prohibits torture and degrading treatment. Ayotte's proposal would allow for a classified section to the manual, which civil rights groups say could be used to sanction more aggressive techniques.

Ayotte said that "terrorists shouldn't be able to view all of our interrogation practices online, and the measure I introduced fixes that glaring flaw."

A provision in the amendment would require that the methods comply with the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005 as well as the 1985 U.N. Convention. But the amendment also would supersede the executive order that President Barack Obama signed two days after taking office in 2009 that says prisoners "shall in all circumstances be treated humanely and shall not be subjected to violence to life and person (including murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment, and torture), nor to outrages upon personal dignity (including humiliating and degrading treatment)."

That executive order also nullified interpretations of the law issued by President George W. Bush's Justice Department.

Three Senate Republicans have signed on to Ayotte's amendment ? Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas.

The Senate resumes work on the sweeping defense bill next week and it already faces a veto threat over several provisions dealing with the handling of terrorist suspects. The administration has argued that congressional micromanaging and restrictions are unwarranted as it prosecutes the war on terror with such successes as the killing of Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki, two body blows to al-Qaida.

The White House and several senior Democrats oppose a provision in the bill that would require military custody of suspected terrorists determined to be a member of al-Qaida or its affiliate and involved in the planning or an attack on the United States. The legislation also would limit the government's authority to transfer detainees.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and other administration officials argue that such steps would restrict the administration's ability to detain, interrogate and prosecute suspected terrorists.

The White House Office of Management and Budget issued a statement last week saying it supported the broader defense bill but could not accept any legislation that "challenges or constrains the president's authorities to collect intelligence, incapacitate dangerous terrorists and protect the nation."

Electronic contact lenses give rabbits Terminator vision, headed to humans soon (Yahoo! News)

Augmented reality could soon be just a blink away

In mankind's seemingly endless strive to become more robot than human, scientists at the University of Washington in Seattle have taken a big step forward ? giving rabbits a Terminator-esque vision enhancement. Using advanced contact lens technology, researchers have put small pixel displays into the eyes of bunnies in order to test the feasibility of future use in humans.

The first wireless pixel displays tested on the rabbits look a lot like ordinary contact lenses, but with a small ring around the edge. A tiny illuminated section in the center of the device is activated by a radio transmitter, causing the spot to light up. In testing, the display sprung to life at a distance of 3 feet from the signal source when the lens was sitting freely, but required a distance of just 2 centimeters to activate when placed in the animal's eye.

The tests were deemed a success, as they demonstrated that on-eye displays could be placed and removed without damaging the sensitive outer coverings of a living eye. Future tests aim to bump up the resolution to include multiple pixels capable of displaying numbers or text. Barring any major roadblocks, future versions could be useful in displaying navigation instructions or monitoring medical conditions such as glaucoma and diabetes.

'Al-Qaida sympathizer' accused of NYC bomb plots (AP)

NEW YORK ? An "al-Qaida sympathizer" accused of plotting to bomb police and post offices in New York City as well as U.S. troops returning home remained in police custody after an arraignment on numerous terrorism-related charges.

Jose Pimentel of Manhattan was described by Mayor Michael Bloomberg at a Sunday news conference announcing Pimentel's arrest as "a 27-year-old al-Qaida sympathizer" who was motivated by terrorist propaganda and resentment of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said police had to move quickly to arrest Pimentel on Saturday because he was ready to carry out his plan.

"He was in fact putting this bomb together," Kelly said. "He was drilling holes and it would have been not appropriate for us to let him walk out the door with that bomb."

Ten years after 9/11, New York remains a prime terrorism target. Bloomberg said at least 14 terrorist plots, including the latest alleged scheme, have targeted the city since the Sept. 11 attacks. No attack has been successful, however. Pakistani immigrant Faisal Shahzad is serving a life sentence for trying to detonate a car bomb in Times Square in May 2010.

Kelly said Sunday that Pimentel was energized and motivated to carry out his plan by the Sept. 30 killing of al-Qaida's U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.

"He decided to build the bomb August of this year, but clearly he jacked up his speed after the elimination of al-Awlaki," Kelly said.

An unemployed U.S. citizen originally from the Dominican Republic, Pimentel was "plotting to bomb police patrol cars and also postal facilities as well as targeted members of our armed services returning from abroad," Bloomberg said.

New York police had him under surveillance for at least a year and were working with a confidential informant; no injury to anyone or damage to property is alleged, Kelly said. In addition, authorities have no evidence that Pimentel was working with anyone else, the mayor said.

"He appears to be a total lone wolf," the mayor said. "He was not part of a larger conspiracy emanating from abroad."

At Pimentel's arraignment, his lawyer Joseph Zablocki said his client's behavior leading up to the arrest was not that of a conspirator trying to conceal some violent scheme. Zablocki said Pimentel was public about his activities and was not trying to hide anything.

"I don't believe that this case is nearly as strong as the people believe," Zablocki said. "He (Pimentel) has this very public online profile. ... This is not the way you go about committing a terrorist attack."

Pimentel, also known as Muhammad Yusuf, was denied bail and remained in custody. The bearded, bespectacled man wore a black T-shirt and black drawstring pants and smiled at times during the proceeding. His mother and brother attended the arraignment, Zablocki said.

Pimentel is accused of having an explosive device Saturday when he was arrested, one he planned to use against others and property to terrorize the public. The charges accuse him of conspiracy going back at least to October 2010, and include first-degree criminal possession of a weapon as a crime of terrorism, and soliciting support for a terrorist act.

Bloomberg said at the news conference that Pimentel represents the type of threat FBI Director Robert Mueller has warned about as U.S. forces erode the ability of terrorists to carry out large scale attacks.

"This is just another example of New York City because we are an iconic city ... this is a city that people would want to take away our freedoms gravitate to and focus on," Bloomberg said.

Kelly said a confidential informant had numerous conversations with Pimentel on Sept. 7 in which he expressed interest in building small bombs and targeting banks, government and police buildings.

Pimentel also posted on his website trueislam1.com and on blogs his support of al-Qaida and belief in jihad, and promoted an online magazine article that described in detail how to make a bomb, Kelly said.

Among his Internet postings, the commissioner said, was an article that states: "People have to understand that America and its allies are all legitimate targets in warfare."

The New York Police Department's Intelligence Division was involved in the arrest. Kelly said Pimentel spent most of his years in Manhattan and lived about five years in Schenectady. He said police in the Albany area tipped New York City police off to Pimentel's activities.

Asked why federal authorities were not involved in the case, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said there was communication with them but his office felt that given the timeline "it was appropriate to proceed under state charges."

About 1,000 of the city's roughly 35,000 officers are assigned each day to counterterrorism operations. The NYPD also sends officers overseas to report on how other cities deal with terrorism. Through federal grants and city funding, the NYPD has spent millions of dollars on technology to outfit the department with the latest tools ? from portable radiation detectors to the network of hundreds of cameras that can track suspicious activity.

Alexis Smith, 22, who lives in an apartment in the same building as Pimentel, said she was shocked that he was a suspect in a terrorist plot. "He was always very courteous to us," she said, adding that Pimentel helped her carry groceries and luggage into the building.

"It's nice to know he was only working alone," she said.

By presenting a new interpretation of a Maya hieroglyphic verb, Gerardo Aldana, associate professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies at UC Santa Barbara, has revised the understanding of one of the longest-studied texts in Maya archaeology. Aldana's research appears in his new book, "Tying Headbands or Venus Appearing: New Translations of k'al, the Dresden Codex Venus Pages and Classic Period Royal 'Binding' Rituals" (Archaeopress, 2011).

According to Aldana, at the end of the 19th century, the German philologist Ernst Frstemann discovered the basis of the modern interpretation of a Venus table in the 13th-century Maya manuscript known as the Dresden Codex. The six-page Venus table is an almanac dedicated to tracking the observable phases of the planet Venus. Frstemann's interpretation laid the groundwork for academic and popular 20th-century characterizations of the Maya as "obsessed" with astronomy and time. While scholars have added to his interpretation over the next 100 years, all have followed the basic model resulting from his work.

In his new book, Aldana shows that "k'al," the main verb referring to Venus events in the Dresden Codex, has been misread. He argues that the verb refers to an "enclosing" of time and space, such as that found throughout the Postclassic Mesoamerican ritual activity. "The

key to my argument is that previously recognized records are pictorial, graphically representing the 'cosmogram' that ties space and time together," Aldana said. "But I show that the Dresden Codex Venus Table records the same concept in hieroglyphic text the idea is the same in both cases, but represented by an image in the Aztec convention, and by hieroglyphic text according to Mayan sensibilities."

The new hieroglyphic reading is accompanied by a revision of the mathematics of the Venus Table, also departing from the 70-year-old tradition in the field, Aldana said. "Overall, the result shows a much greater coherence to Postclassic religion throughout Mesoamerica," he explained. "And while contact between the regions has never been in question the Venus pages in the Dresden Codex, for example, include the names of Aztec deities, modified so they could be written with Mayan hieroglyphs the new interpretation goes beyond the mere appropriation of 'gods' to the sharing of deeper religious concepts."

The revision is also tied to Aldana's recent work on the calendar correlation, the means of correlating dates on the ancient Maya calendar with those on the Gregorian or modern calendar. In his chapter, titled "The Maya Calendar Correlation Problem," which appeared in the book, "Calendar and Years II: Astronomy and Time in the Ancient and Medieval World" (Oxbow Books, 2010), he showed that the currently accepted correlation constant the GMT is incorrect. Based in part on astronomical events, the GMT is named for early Mayanists Joseph Goodman, Juan Martinez-Hernandez, and J. Eric S. Thompson. Each contributed to the calculation.

In "Tying Headbands or Venus Appearing," Aldana demonstrates the scholarly value of letting go of the GMT. Without the GMT, he argues, a new coherence is revealed between the architecture and hieroglyphic texts of Late Classic Copan and the material in the Postclassic Dresden Codex. "This interpretation shows that the same religious ideas of astronomy, calendrics, space, and time were held in the Classic period, through the Postclassic period, and into early Colonial times," he said.
